Jeremiah 11 (NIV)

The Covenant Is Broken
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord2“Listen to the terms of this covenant and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. 3 Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant— 4 the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the iron-smelting furnace.’ I said, ‘Obey me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God............Continue Reading

  1. God shows His great disappointment with His people in that they were given the rules and just asked to obey and they could not do that. He reminds them how many times they were given chances and told to clean up their acts and in their own selfishness ignored those warnings.
I love that He uses Jeremiah’s own story of God’s provision and protection to once again show them that the path of obedience is the favorable path and that the path of disobedience leads to destruction.

  2. As He so often does, God calls His people back to the covenant by reminding them what it says. Even sending Jeremiah in the streets shows His commitment to let the people know why the judgement is coming. The covenant included what God would do for them, what the people would do in response and then what would happen if the people obeyed or disobeyed. What a noble thing for God to declare to them as His judgement is upon them…the very thing the covenant warned. He was faithful to His part, but the Jewish people were completely unfaithful to their part. They were to be a light to the pagan nations to lead them to God, but instead they took on the gods of the pagans. And now some have threatened Jeremiah’s life if he keeps giving God’s message…how reassuring that God assures He will deal with them. It should be a comfort to us as well when people oppose us as we share the gospel….

  3. God reminds the people of His covenant, that they repeatedly break. They threaten Jeremiah’s life if he continues, but God assures Him that He will deal with them.

I think this is something that we need to have in mind when we read God’s word. How much of God’s word do we disregard? How much of our behavior do we justify or overlook?

It’s uncomfortable to hear, Jeremiah, stop telling us this.
