Isaiah 38 (NIV)

Hezekiah’s Illness
1 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”
2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord3“Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly..........Continue Reading

  1. Hezekiah once again immediately brings his concerns to God in prayer and God answers. God added 15 years to his life and promised him to see the victory Assyria. God not only supplied Hezekiah’s physical need but also his emotional need of safety. God is concerned about all aspects of us and can deliver us from all situations.

  2. This chapter shows us that when God says it is time to go, it is best to go. Not that we can’t understand why Hezekiah would want to continue to live, but asking God after the prophet tells him to get ready…it was gracious even to receive that…shows a lack of faith in my book. Not that it is wrong to ask, but certainly be willing to be open to whatever God chooses. Yet God is very gracious to grant the request..and even more gracious to give him a sign that reorients the marking of time. Just imagine what is involved astronomicallly for the sun to go back ten steps. But when you are the author of the laws of Physics, it is not a problem. And Hezekiah is wise to praise and thank God for what He provides for him. But considering what happens in the next chapter and how Hezekiah ends his days, one wonders if even he saw the wisdom of him dying at this point.

  3. God gives Hezekiah another 15 years, after he is told that he needs to get his house in order because he will die.
I don’t see that he is asking for more time, he is just weeping and asking God to remember his faithfulness to Him. “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what is good in Your sight.”
God gives him more time and a miraculous sign.

What was the common understanding of the afterlife before Christ came? Where did/do Jews believe they go when they die? Do they all go to Abraham’s bosom?
