Reading along with us in 2 Kings, Acts, & Hebrews? Here’s today’s reading:

Hebrews 5 (NIV)

1 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.……Continue Reading

  1. Spiritual maturity, from milk to solid food, being not only ready but willing for the meatier parts of Christian life. Some people may be Christians for years, however, they are still not digging in and operating with a true understanding of faith, a true revelation of the full knowledge and power of God. We know that spiritual maturity will come with its challenges, facing things we need to let go of, sins we need to turn away from, so maybe we choose to stay as infants trying to be ignorant to what needs to happen next. But we need to hunger and thirst for His righteousness in such a way that we want the solid food and all that comes with that!

  2. Continuing in showing how Jesus is better than what is found in the Old Testament, the writer describes that Jesus is a better high priest. He does not need to offer sacrifices for His sins to approach God, rather He became the sacrifice that allows all of us to come before God. And yet Jesus was not a descendent of Aaron, so He is not a priest in his line, but He is a priest like Melchizedek. Melchizedek was recognized by the Jews as a priest as he accepted offerings from Abraham. So he represented God before man and man before God in the same way Jesus does. He also comes out of no where and then has no further interaction with Abraham, so like Jesus coming from eternity and the returning back to God. And because Jesus is all that, isn’t it fitting that we grow into everything He provides and desires for us. So not just knowing information about Him, but letting that information change us.

  3. Don’t let yourself get to a place where you no longer try to understand God’s Word. If you do this, you will become stagnant and ignorant of the things of God and you will lose sight of what is right and wrong. Instead, continue on as Proverbs 3:21 says…do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.

  4. What a chapter. Showing Jesus’ divine schedule and humanity. Speaking of high priests. When Hebrews was written, the Roman’s appointed the high priest in Jerusalem and where did they end up. But God in the Old Testament chose Aaron and Aaron‘s descendants to be high priests. Jesus the highest priest of all was also chosen by God. The source of eternal salvation as the verdict of our sins were crucified with him, setting aside any judgment, an undeserved membership in God‘s family. God’s vote for us. God’s energy poured out on us. This is too much to comprehend. Our salvation is the reason we can smile in the morning and rest in the middle of the night for God loves us and we belong to him!!!

  5. Jesus is our High Priest, but He is not a Levite.
Jesus is our King, from Judah and David. He cannot be both, unless, of course he is from another “order”, the order of Melchizedek. It always struck me, Gods sovereignty over what seems to be obscure events, brought to the fore to fulfill Gods purpose. Melchizedek seems like a random person, who comes and gives offerings to Abraham, but it was all part of Gods grand plan. David mentions him, Melchizedek, in Psalm 110, which is quoted here.
