Genesis 50 (NIV)

1 Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. 2 Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him, 3 taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.……Continue Reading

  1. Genesis 50
Once Joseph wept deeply for Jacob the embalming took place. It took 40 days. The Egyptians mourned him 70 days. Pharaoh told Joseph to go as Jacob had instructed him . There was family, Pharaohs officials, and dignitaries of the courts and Egypt. Joseph mourned his father for 7 days
They carried out Jacob’s wish concerning his burial. I found Joseph to have the heart of God as he assured his brothers there would be no harm coming to them. Again he explains how God took something bad and turned it into good! Joseph died at 110 yrs old. He told his brothers God will take you out of these lands and to the land was promised as an oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob! Joseph was placed in a coffin and buried in Egypt. Joseph never disobeyed what dreams he interpreted. His heart was so pure! A real hero of his time!

  2. ”But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.“
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭50‬:‭20‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

It is interesting to think of notable Israelites embalmed. Maybe they are still mummies in tombs somewhere. That would be an interesting archaeological find. Moses took Joseph’s bones at the Exodus from Egypt and then Joshua brought them to schechem.

  3. Genesis 50:20 “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

This verse makes me thing of Romans 8:28…”And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to the will of God.”

Whether the evil comes from an outside actor as in Joseph’s case, or is self-inflicted through our own sinful actions, God promises to work all things for good for those who love God. If we will surrender to Him, trust Him, and obey Him (which is how Jesus taught us that we actually love Him and demonstrate that we believe in Him (John 14:12, 15, 21, 23, 24, 31))…he can turn even the most destructive elements of our lives for our good and ultimately, for His glory.

  4. Why did not Joseph’s brothers immediately take him out of Egypt and bury his remains? They were prompt to bury Israel.

God did visit the Hebrews though, just as Joseph said. They did not bury him in the promised land and ended up suffering four centuries until God had to deliver them. -reb

  5. The similarities between. The life of Joseph and what Jesus went through on earth is the Reason we find this truth so captivating

  6. Bible doesn’t explain why his remains were not removed. Joseph was a purchased slave, and was still Pharaoh’s property (Googled it). If this is the reason why he could not be removed, one can only speculate. There is a lot of conjecture….

What is the point? I think Joseph believed God and his promise to Abraham. Though he was a stranger in a strange land, he looked forward to God’s blessing on his people. Unshakeable faith, and it mattered to him, as some kind of silent statement, that he must be removed from Egypt

  7. Lest I forget…Egypt was saved physically by God through Joseph. It was an object lesson they missed, a precious gift if only they would have opened their eyes to God their Savior! Egypt loved Joseph! They missed the mark.

A generation rose, perhaps two or three, where his great deeds were forgotten. All the joy of salvation faded, and all was well. Egypt enslaved the people who they should have honored. It is not lost on me that the thousands who could have died by famine were multiplied horrendously during the exodus. A nation forgot. Romans 9:17 reminds me that God wants all the world to see his power through ME! God will do it to everyone of us, one way or another. Just contemplating, reb

  8. Genesis 50. What an incredible man was Joseph. So forgiving and kind. By the way it reads, it seemed that he was the first of the brothers to die. Imagine how old the other brothers were!

  9. As Joseph requested that his bones would be brought out of Egypt after 400 years. so they were about 430 years latter. Exodus 13 records this fact. Yes just as Amy said in her statement. Scripture is always the best answer to help with our questions. Exodus 13: 19 { And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel saying , God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.} Earlier the time frame is mentioned. Exodus 12: 41 { And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years , even the self same day it came to pass that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.}

  10. What an entourage that went to Canaan to bury Jacob. It shows the affinity Pharaoh and the rest of Egypt had for Joseph because of who Joseph was and what he did. Joseph’s character also comes through in recognizing the greater purposes of God even in the midst of what He had suffered and not holding against his brothers what they had done to him. It is unfortunate that they make up this story about Jacob telling Joseph to forgive. What a bad tendency lying is, and it is worse when it is something established in a family and future generations then function in it. Something that seems so expedient is one of the more corrupting aspects of human relationships. And then this great man Joseph dies. What a great example of God’s sovereign hand on a life, that works all to the good in the end, which should help us believe Him for what He is doing in the middle.

  11. What an amazing burial scene this must have been. So many and so emotional.
Sad that the sons of Jacob so quickly let fear bring them right back to a place of lying. They still did not see that God had used what they had done for such a great result. Joseph had saved Israel, he had become someone so important in God’s plan for His people. Thank God that Jospeh taught them what true trust and faitfulness to God looked like before he died by forgiving them.
