  1. Jesus certainly entered this world under the most difficult circumstances. No place for His mom to give birth, ending up in a stable, and almost immediately hunted for His life. He could have come in as a king, a ruler, rich and powerful but yet so humble and fragile He came to save us.
Sad to see Herod so focused on killing Jesus that he would take all those innocent lives in pursuit of his evil plan.

  2. What a great aspect of this account. Magi, astronomers/astrologers, come into Jerusalem asking Jewish people, because they should know, where has the new king been born because this star showed up one day (actually, probably night) and led us here. Now this becomes all the buzz in the city and it caught Herod’s ear. Now Herod was a very evil king. It was said that it was safer to be Herod’s dog than his son because he was so suspicious and protective of his throne. So he pulls these foreigners aside and gets the details. Naturally Herod does not want to worship Him, he wants to destroy Him. So the Magi find the boy, worship Him and God gives them a dream telling them not to go back to Herod. God then sends Joseph an angel ( he has seen these before) and warns Him to flees to Egypt. Just imagine what that was like for Joseph and Mary. A year or so after Jesus’ birth and people are already threatening His life! But it does show how much the Father does to protect and provide for His son.

And then Herod does one of the most evil things he could do. There is no more innocent blood than the blood of a child and to violently kill dozens because of his insecurity. It goes to show the lengths those in power will go to to protect their power. How true that has been through the ages….

  3. I was noticing all of the dream appearances or messages that people received. I am always the skeptic if someone tells me that they had a dream and came to some conclusion, but it is clear through scripture that God or His angels did speak to people through dreams. Why wouldn’t he do that anymore? I think it must be like prophesy, until you see the fulfillment, you really don’t know whether to trust it. It looks like these dreams required immediate belief and action, they really couldn’t wait and see! I confess, I have had dreams that cause me to come to conclusions, fortunately, no immediate call to action.

The wise men following the star and God using the star made me think of fact that God’s plan is laid out perfectly, it involves everything, the earth, the heavens, men, women, angels, kings, nations. Satan moves in Herod to try to thwart God’s plan for salvation for mankind, by killing all the babies. There is a spiritual battle going on at all times. I think we should be paying more attention.

  4. 19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
