Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
1 The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. 2“My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house.……Continue Reading

  1. A sad chapter for sure when we read of such depraviy. To see the herd mentality of participating in such sin and it almost becoming normal. Even though Lot tried to spare the angels from the obvious rape that these people wanted to happen, he did it by offering the rape of his own daughters. Clearly Lot and his family had become too comfortable there and their hearts were in Sodom. They did not have a sense of urgency to leave the city even in the face of it’s destruction and the angels had to litterally drag them out.

His wife not only delays in her leaving but disobeys the one direction to not look back. We should not have a heart that longs for sin and when we choose new life in Christ we do not look back and miss the sins of our past but rather full steam ahead in hope to live a life that glorifies God.

Now clearly if Lot and his wife had grown such an affinity for Sodom, it seems natural that their daughters would be raised with a warped sense of morality which becomes evident in their plan to sleep with their own father! As parents we hand down sin to the next generation through our words and actions and I can only imagine what these girls have heard and seen to come to this as a logical solution to their problem. Lot’s moral compromise affected far more than himself and it challenges us as parents to be aware of what we accept and tolerate in this world for our children’s sake.

  2. Genesis 19
This was alot to take in. Lot brought the angels inside to care for them. He knew the evilness in his land. They tried to force themselves into his house. They wanted to have sex with them. The angels tried to save Lot and his family since they new the city would be destroyed. Lot had been saved once before by Abraham. They said do not look back but Lot’s wife did and turned to salt. The daughters were evil also to purposely get their father drunk and get pregnant by him. They did not wait for God’s plan. They thought theirs was the answer. Like we do!

    1. If ever we had a glimpse as to how evil the world was before the flood, here it is. Sodom, Gomorrah, the men of the city, Lot himself, his sons in law, his daughters and own wife, all desperately wicked, contaminated, hesitating and delaying until the angels literally pulled them out. Lot thought doomed Zoar would be better than the mountains, pleaded for its mercy, and got it. Only to find out, it was just as wicked as the rest, and had to flee it too.
May God give us eyes of understanding. -reb

      1. Oh Reb…the world is no less evil now.

May the peace of God which passes all understanding guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus until His return!!!

  3. Nailed it Kelly. Lot hesitation to leave the worldly possessions even in a detestable society. His wife looking back. Let the dead bury their own dead. Put your hands to the plow. Two facets of God. To not destroy for the sake of 10. To have mercy on Lot and his family as Abraham asked. And then the destruction of these cities. Hates sin and also patience with us when we do. Lot’s 2 daughters. Go find a husband years ago. They also fell to the detestable life style of sodom Imagine Moab. Tell me who my dad is again. Grandpa??????

  4. I just lost all of my comments on this chapter and I don`t know if I can get it back. But it to late to continue for it is 12;51.

    1. been there done that Dennis! Sorry to hear, but better for those things to be in your heart than here on this page!

  5. POST SCRIPT: Lot said his daughters were virgins, yet they were married.
    Did Lot lie?
Did Lot tell the truth, and husband daughters and their husband’s abstain?
How can a marriage be consummated otherwise?
If they were married, and abstained, what gave Lot any right to offer his married daughters? They were no longer his to give.
None of this narrative makes any sense, other than gross depravity. This is a very dark chapter indeed. -gy

    1. Most likely his daughters were pledged to be married…so the men would be considered son in laws in that day even before they were actually married.

  6. Dennis, ouch! Been there, done that, your commentaries are very thorough and effective.

Mark, you hit it on the head: God hates sin!

How can we live any longer therein? (we can’t)

“Go and sin no more.” (we can!) -reb

  7. The fact that Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city shows that he may have been a person of influence in Sodom possibly showing his further entrenchment in the evil that was there. It is no wonder though that he insisted the visitors not stay in the square. And what an indication of the level of evil and abuse that was in the city, that young and old would come looking for fresh meat and give no consideration of principles of hospitality that were common in those days (hence Lot’s suggestion that they are under the protection of his house). It is no wonder that an outcry had come to God’s ears. But how effective God’s power is to thwart the efforts of the abusers and leave them bumping into each other. And quite true that Lot’s hesitation is a further indicator of his connection to the city and yet he recognizes the mercy they had on him (for the sake of Abraham). And God’s judgment here shows what God thinks about sin, especially when it translates to harming others. It is a small picture of what awaits those who do not receive the salvation that God offers through Jesus. It is interesting that Lot eventually flees to the mountains anyway. Fear is often the preoccupation of those who are not following God and therefore don’t have the assurance that comes from recognizing His presence and protection with us. And how warped our minds and standards become when we are exposed to evil. Bad company does corrupt good morals. And once again, bad results come from bad decisions. The biggest enemies of Israel birthed in the context of this sin.

    1. Great words, Pastor…I have heard it said and can testify to the veracity of the statement…deliberate disobedience to Christ and assurance of salvation simply cannot go hand in hand.

Perfect love casts out fear…and we will most greatly and truly know that perfect love when we seek to demonstrate our love for Christ in the only way He instructed to do so…by obeying His commands. It is in following the shepherd that the sheep find their rest.

  8. Sodom is so wicked. The angels say that the outcry against it is great.
”For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”“
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭19‬:‭13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
I wonder who was crying against it if not even 10 people could be found worth sparing. Maybe the righteous fled.
Lot should have fled. For his children’s sake if not his own.
”Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.“
    ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭18‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
    Run away!
