1 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.”

  1. I love that God instead of getting frustrated with Moses’ lack of trust He reassures Moses and reminds him of His plans and His power to do it through him.
It is because of His amazing grace and mercy that He keeps reassuring us when we worry and doubt!

  2. 6“Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lordyour God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’ ”
9Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.

  3. How often do we find ourselves having the whiny/complainy mindset that Moses has here…Lord you haven’t helped at all? (ie. what are You doing and why do you have me in this mess?) But we, like Moses, find in the end that that mindset is short sighted! And consider what God says to reassure Moses as well as confront Moses’ doubt. First, you will see what I will do. I will do things that you will clearly recognize as coming from my hand. Second, what I do will have results…he will not only let you go but drive you out of the country. Third, I am doing a new thing with you. I have not revealed myself to anyone like I have revealed myself to you…even the Patriarchs! They knew me as God Almighty, but I never revealed myself as Yahweh to them…only to you and this generation of Israelites! (That is awesome!). Fourth, I remember the covenant I have made and that is the backdrop of what I am doing here. I know the land I promised and I am going to get you back there! Fifth, I have heard Israelites groaning and I care and remember my covenant to be their God.

And now Moses, with all that with you, behind you, undergirding you…go tell the people what I just told you, but use these words…..and the Israelites didn’t believe because of their discouragement..Okay Moses…now go tell Pharaoh….But why should I do that…if the Israelites didn’t listen, why would he…and btw, it’s probably because of the problem I told you I had all along…

You know, God has not promised us a rose garden. There will be tough times, temptation we confront, difficult people we need to deal with, and things we face especially following Him who is spirit and needing faith to know what is true when we cannot see or feel what is true. But the great benefit we have from passages like this, is we know the end of the story. We know that God did exactly what He said. We find ourselves saying to Moses, how can you be complaining like this…don’t you realize what God is going to do? But the thing is he can’t see, just like we can’t see when we are discouraged or afraid or insecure or confused. But what we can realize is what God could say, and through His word has said, to us is BETTER than what He says to Moses. We have a relationship with God based in Jesus, a covenant established in His blood, We are co-heirs with Him in God’s kingdom. We have the Holy Spirit and Jesus living inside us (Moses didn’t have that). We are more than conquerors in Christ! And the list goes on…..

The key to the Christian life is to believe those things, embrace those things, encourage our own souls in those things, especially when we are discouraged and wonder where God is and what He is doing. We can always find peace and joy…we can always move forward…we just have to hear God speaking to us like He speaks to Moses…..you’ve got this because I am with you!

  4. God repeats his promise to Moses and the Israelites: “I am the Lord; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with [f]an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you into the land which I swore[g] to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the Lord.’”

It is interesting that Moses protests saying that he is a “man of uncircumcised lips”. Moses sees his unworthiness. Although it is seen as a lack of faith, surely recognizing ones own unworthiness and sinfulness is a mark of humility as well.

It reminds me of Isaiah who see the Lord and says, “woe to me! I am a man of unclean lips!”
When God says, ““Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
Isaiah says, “Here am I. Send me!”

Admittedly unworthy, but eager and willing.
