Deuteronomy 17 & 18
The occult section of this chapter made me think about things like astrology, mediums, crystals, and other such things that people so comfortably go to for advice, counsel, or comfort. We must be careful that we are only seeking guidance from God, His words and His truths. Additionally we see false prophets and false teachings even today that twist the word of God for their needs or purpose and we must have God’s word written on our heart and regularly spend time in it so we can stand firm on His truths and not fall for anything else.
Deuteronomy 18
“But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name, a word which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ And if you say in your heart, ‘How will we recognize the word which the Lord has not spoken?’ When the prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, and the thing does not happen or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you are not to be afraid of him.”

Too often have I seen Christians attempt to speak in prophecies when in reality they were guided by their own self-interest instead of the Holy Spirit; claiming to speak on behalf of God in order to manipulate people into doing what they wanted. They might as well have been speaking through divination to pagan gods since the punishment in the OT is the same.
Let us be guided by the Holy Spirit in how we live our lives and interact with people.

Amen Kelly! God doesn`t want anyone adding or taking away from His word. The occult with all it`s forms is against God. Including false religions and cults. If they are not for Him then they are against Him. Satan is the Prince and Power of the air and will try in every way to deceive mankind. This is why it is so important to have a close relationship with the Lord after we get saved. He wants us to read and study His word. Then we will know error when we see it. In this He also gives us the Holy Spirit to guide us. Jesus and others have said that in the latter days there will be many false prophets; including claiming to be the Christ. We know from scripture how Christ left in the Ascension and what the angels told the disciples. After Jesus rose again, He was on earth for 40 days. Then He Ascended to Heaven. The angels told the disciples in verse 11 {Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven.} Read Acts 1:1-14 to get the complete context. But this is an example of knowing what scripture says about His return. Also, Luke 24:50-53 gives a brief mention of His Ascension. May the Lord bless each of you.

What a dynamic of trust, dependence on each other and the worship of God that would be part of the Levites not having an inheritance and their inheritance being God Himself and the portions that would come from the offerings. They would receive the first fruits because of their connection to God, but how dependent they would be on the Israelites living in faith and obedience. And how foolish and dangerous it is to consult anything for counsel or support when the God of the heavens is available to be our counselor as well as the instruction we receive from His word. And as is often the case, as God says don’t do this, He then gives His solution/answer. You don’t need to consult mediums because I will send you a prophet amongst you and He will give you the direction that you need. This is another instance how God is referring to the prophets and leaders of the Old testament that the people were to head as if they were hearing from God Himself, but the greatest expression of this is Jesus Himself. And if someone claims to be a prophet and what He says doesn’t come true…don’t worry about what they say.
