I have always had a core apprehension and concern about mediums. tarots card readings, etc. I know there is power in the darkness and when people start seeking these things for comfort in particular after the loss of someone they love it is so easy to be lead astray. We must seek God for answers to our questions, sadness, and loss. This chapter reminds us that is what God expects and warns us about happening when tempted by these dark practices.
How often it is repeated that the Levites are sanctified to God and God is thereby their inheritance. They would therefore share in the offerings that the Israelites would bring to God. They would aid in the Israelites’ worship of God and help them do what they had been instructed to do. The prophet would be responsible to handle communication from God that is unique and specific as well as what is about future things. Together they were God’s provision for the Israelites following Him.
With all that they would offer, there would be no need to follow the practices of the pagan nations because it was due to the detestable nature of those practices that they were being driven out of the land in the first place. God has always provided what we need to live our lives and follow Him. Yet the kingdom of darkness always has it’s provisions alongside that, competing and comparing to the things of God. May we see, believe and understand that God’s ways are always better and satan’s ways always lead to darkness and destruction.
God’s people are to be distinctive. They are not to seek out mediums and after the dead like the world does but they are to be marked as people who seek God’s wisdom. For the Israelites, they were to honor and take care of the Levites and follow the teaching of the prophets. For us, we follow The Prophet, Jesus Christ, and his teachings.
Should a proclaimed believer seek the advice of a medium , tarot card reading or other dark art, they probably are not a true believer or lack the ability to fully love the Lord.
False prophecy is serious..
Deuteronomy 18
And the Lord said to me: ‘What they have spoken is good. 18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 19 And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.
Is this considered Jesus specifically because it is singular “a prophet”? Because there were other prophets after Moses who heard and spoke for God.
17The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”
