Reading along with us in Deuteronomy? Here’s today’s reading:
Deuteronomy 16 (NIV)
The Passover
1 Observe the month of Aviv and celebrate the Passover of the Lord your God, because in the month of Aviv he brought you out of Egypt by night. 2 Sacrifice as the Passover to the Lord your God an animal from your flock or herd at the place the Lord will choose as a dwelling for his Name........Continue Reading
Once again I am struck by the detail and specifics God puts into every instruction and the significance of each step. How the steps lay out the bigger picture of Jesus’ coming sacrifice that will eliminate the need for these steps but yet make the living sacrifice real to us.
Deuteronomy 16
Deuteronomy 16
Celebrate, rejoice, be joyful says God. Keep your eyes towards Him, and He will give you reason for all these things
In addition to daily and weekly reminders of God’s presence and provision in their lives, there would be periodic festivals they would also celebrate through the year. The mighty work that God did amongst the Israelites in Egypt would be something to be passed down to every generation so they would be reminded of all God did to redeem them and the sacrifice that was made that made them live and not die. The other festivals were significant for an agricultural society where they would recognize God’s hand and provision in the harvest.
And boy how important justice is, for people to be treated fairly and decisions to be made based on the truth of a matter rather than personal connection or bribery. As we see different facets of our society breaking down, we understand better why God put things in place originally and what wisdom there is in it.

Deut. 16-19
There is that #7 again: God’s program on behalf of man.
“Seven days you shall keep a sacred feast to the Lord your God in the place which the Lord chooses, because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you surely rejoice.”
God’s instruction on justice is so very relevant. I sure hope we get back to it in our nation, but regardless, I am thankful that God is just.
“You shall appoint judges and officers in all your gates, which the Lord your God gives you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with just judgment. You shall not pervert justice; you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous. You shall follow what is altogether just, that you may live and inherit the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”
1Observe the month of Aviv and celebrate the Passover of the Lord your God, because in the month of Aviv he brought you out of Egypt by night. 2Sacrifice as the Passover to the Lord your God an animal from your flock or herd at the place the Lord will choose as a dwelling for his Name. 3Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste—so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt.
The word to them (and to us) – remember what the Lord has done for them (and us)
