Deuteronomy 1 (NIV)

The Command to Leave Horeb
1 These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan—that is, in the Arabah—opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab. 2 (It takes eleven days to go from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir road.)……Continue Reading

  1. Deuteronomy 1

Great place to return to the Torah, as Moses begins summarizing the major events of the previous book.

“The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day like the stars of heaven in number.”
    ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭1‬:‭10‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬
Also interesting to see God fulfilling some of the promises He’s made so far, even going back to the promise He gave to Abraham.

  2. As Moses speaks to the people in this first chapter of Deuteronomy he recalls much of their journey to get to the promised land, their mistakes, and disobedience and provides the “second law” as Deuteronomy means. What is amazing is as messy and turbulent as the Israelites journey had been to get to this point, they did stay with God. They rebelled, they fought, disobeyed, and they grumbled, but ultimately God’s will for His people was accomplished (more times in spite of them then because of them). Not a pretty picture but I suppose when we look at our our journey with Christ it is paved with many bumps in the road but what we learn from the Israelites it to stay with God because His way is best and it will lead us to better things.

  3. ”Yet, for all that, you did not believe the Lord your God,“
    ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭1‬:‭32‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
Moses gives a recap of all that has happened. When you see all that God had done for them – bringing them out of Egypt, parting the sea, the plunder, the fire to lead them, giving them the land, but they did not believe and instead thought “the Lord hates us”. It is such a good idea that God instituted Passover and communion so that when we face opposition, trial, dangers, giants, we remember what He has done. I have a prayer log where I can see how God has answered prayers, not always in the ways I expected, but always an answer.

  4. Glad to be on this sight again. I have been reading in Jesus booklet and have finished the reading. I am healing fine after my double knee replacement. Glad to start this new year in Deuteronomy with you all. May we ever learn spiritual lessons from God`s word and not be like the people of Israel. They were so slow to learn and trust in the God of all creation even after His constant guidance and amazing powers of protection. He supplied their needs of food and water, etc. Even made it possible that their foot wear didn`t wear out. Yet all they could focus on was the negative and not be grateful for the daily needs provided them. May our hearts and minds be grateful in all things this new year. And may it be placed in gratefulness toward our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ who died in our place so that we may live eternally with Him in Heaven. Please keep Melodye and myself in your prayers along with our children and grandchildren. Much prayer is needed. God bless you all as we live for our Lord.

  5. Moses lays out for this new generation of Israelites where the former generation had been, so they will not make the same mistakes as they did. How faithful God had been to them, clearly revealing His power and yet they did not believe and follow. I couldn’t help but think if God laid out my life and showed all that He had done and what I did in response, that there would be times of success and failure. And yet God would only want them and us to reflect on the past to learn from it. There we will see that God always has the best for us and is always trying to lead us to places that will bring glory to His name and ultimate benefit to us. The key is to not shrink back in fear but move forward in faith, trusting that God knows what He is doing and He knows what is best. To our flesh we will feel like we are losing, but in reality we will be gaining in all the ways that true satisfaction matters.
