Advent 2023 – Day 6
1:9 – 2-10
Advent Day 6
The Life of Jesus 2.5-2.8
One thing I noticed in this passage was Mary’s faith. When she saw that there was no more wine she went straight to Jesus, even telling the servants to do whatever He said. It would be easy to trust a miracle worker when you’ve already seen them perform a miracle, but it takes an even greater level of trust when you haven’t seen them perform a miracle before.
The lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world. Can I get any more simple from John’s own words. EVERYONES SINS!!!!! Made righteous by the lamb of God. The world going to wait till they try all their different ways. I’ll end by commenting on the wine at the wedding. The world had given its best shot. But it wasn’t good enough. So God intervenes. And gives the best wine possible. Think about that in your own life
John the baptizer sees Jesus walking by and points Him out to two of his disciples. One of them was Andrew who went and told his brother, Peter that they have found the Messiah and brought him to Jesus. We are not told who this other disciple is here but since the other three gospels don`t include this part most likely the disciple is John the Apostle. He often doesn`t mention his own name but refers in the third person. Then Jesus finds Philp and he follows Jesus, Then Philip finds Nathanael and takes him to Jesus. Nathanael didn`t realize that He was the Messiah until Jesus said that He had seen him under the fig tree. One of Jesus comments about Nathanael was that he was an honest man. This is the only one of His disciples that He refers to in this way. Perhaps there is a reason but all were sinners with their own flaws. Then Jesus does His first miracle by turning the water into wine, It was at His mother`s pleading request and He did it to honor and please her. For He said that it wasn`t the time yet to do miracles. His time has not come. May God bless us all.
John begins his work:
“Look the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world!”
“I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove and rest on this man. So this is what I tell people: ‘He is the Son of God.’
“Look the Lamb of God!”
How humble and trusting John the Baptist was to recognize who Jesus is, confess His superiority over Him and tell his followers to follow Jesus. How important it is for us to know our place in God’s economy and be content with it and live in the fullness of what God has for us as we follow Him. And these new followers set a good pattern for us because once they know about Jesus, they go to their family and friends and tell them what they have found and welcome them to come and see. And how interesting to see Jesus’ awareness of what the future holds for Him and the miraculous things that He will do when He tells Nathaniel that he will see greater things happen than Jesus just recognizing where he had been before Jesus met him. And one such miracle follows. One wonders what Mary might have seen Jesus do or whether she just believed He could do anything and therefore told the servants to do what He said. And Jesus affirms here his willingness to listen and cater to others at times, as well as the importance of marriage and the celebration of it and that alcohol itself is not a problem but people’s abuse of it is.
I can only imagine what the disciples were feeling, seeing, and believing Jesus to be must have been so overwhelming to have each of them stop and pick up their lives and follow Him. But to live with Him day in and day out as His mother Mary did made her so confident to ask Him to help these friends at the wedding who were out of wine. Whether she had seen Him do things or just felt the presence of God so strongly in His life she knew without doubt this was a task He could accomplish. Amazing to have been these people around the Son of God here on earth and amzing for us to read these accounts and have confirmation that there is nothing God can not do in our lives!
