Acts 2 (NIV)

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.……Continue Reading

  1. In Acts 1:15 we are told the number of the people that were there when Matthias was chosen to be the 12th Apostle. The number was 120. In Acts 2 we have the filling of the Holy Spirit. Not sure if this was all on the same day as Acts 1 when this filling took place. But all that were in the room were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages. So, there were 120 people or just the 12 Apostles. This was a sign to the unbelievers that God was doing something here. We as believers are filled with the Holy Spirit but can`t speak in a foreign language except through study. But God can give the ability to speak a foreign language if He so chooses. One of my teaches at Bible School years ago shared with the class how his father as a missionary spoke a foreign language to one person and led that person to Christ and then never spoke the language again. I have no reason to doubt his story. Anyways getting back to Acts 2. It says that the ones filled with the Holy Spirit spoke the foreign languages. There were about 3,000 people that got saved that day and others got saved daily after that. They heard the Apostles or the 120 speaking in their languages. How many languages could they speak at one time? So, my point is that God did both. Both in the speaking and the hearing. God bless you all.

  2. Sorry, I just left an extended comment for this passage and rather than posting the comment, it made me enter my credentials again…. and didn’t keep my post….so you will have to wait to see what I wrote….

    1. Ok, I guess I can summarize the post that got lost..

how privileged we are to have God the creator living within us through the Spirt and how gracious God is to give us and the apostles here a physical/observable event to show the He is doing something that had never been done before…the Holy Spirit in us and not just on us.

I do believe the miracle is in both the speaking and the hearing…the speaking in an unknown tongue and the hearing in the various known tongues….

And what a great way for God to spread the good news of Jesus…having all these Jews cut to the quick by what they did to Jesus and yet the salvation God was accomplishing in it.

And lastly, anyone that wants to call me as to why Acts 2:38 does not support baptismal regeneration, I will explain it to them…or you can take my word for it…

  3. There is much that can be said and debated about the gift of tongues. God clearly gave this gift to some and it is used in the Bible and this is one of those times. However, it is used as a way for God to communicate through these men to so many more. The Holy Spirit provided a way for all these different people to hear the praises of God in a way that each could understand. I see this as more of an example of how the Holy Spirit is revealed to each of us differently in a special, personal way. That “a-ha” moment when you see and internalize the miraculous work that Christ did for you and you come to a place of surrender to that faith and let it transform your life. Here we got to see that happen on a grand scale of 3000 people coming to that place at once and beginning the new church we are blessed to be a part of still today.

  4. What an exciting time! The unity of the church displayed in word and deed.

”And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.“
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
When I read this I thought about the Tower of Babel and the contrast. At the tower God confused their languages to disperse them. They were not striving to obey and serve Him. Here He gives them the ability to communicate despite their different languages, to introduce unity and His plan and purpose and message: the gospel.
I think that is the best purpose of speaking in tongues, to build up the body, hence the call for interpretation in 1 Corinthians 14.

  5. One of my favorite chapters in all scripture. God can use anyone. Your past is irrelevant. Peter is the perfect example. Even to deny 3 times he knew Jesus. All the power he has in this chapter is the Holy Spirit. And we have the same. Wisdom. Power. Love peace joy etc. all ours. Peter quotes some awesome scripture to prove to these people. Jesus is alive! Even to point his finger at them. The one you crucified is lord and Christ. Does not sound like the same person at all. And neither are we!

  6. What shall new believers do when they accept Jesus? Repent, be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Be devoted to the Lord’s Word, fellowship with other believers, help those in need, and praise God for everything.
