Cornelius Calls for Peter
1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. 2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. 3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision.……Continue Reading

  1. This chapter starts off with Centurion named Cornelius who sought after God. He and his household gave alms and prayers. This man is God fearing but he isn`t a believer. God is at work and gives him a vision of an angel telling him to go to Joppa to ask for Simon called Peter. At the same time God is revealing to Peter that salvation is for all. Not just for the Jews. Peter is even told that three men are there by the gate and to go with them. No one has spoken to Peter yet. But it is confirmed by them being there to get him. When Peter finally goes to the Centurion, he shares what God has revealed to him that salvation is for all. The Gentiles that hear his word believe and come to Christ, and then they are baptized with water. This is represented of what they have already done in their hearts. I am so glad that God included us Gentiles and not just the Jewish people. God bless.

  2. Such a cool way for God to both get the news of the gospel to the Gentiles as well as Peter! Peter was still sticking to the laws concerning Jews and Gentiles but God used this vision to make things clear to him. God speaks to us where we are and in ways we can understand. While Peter understood the vision to when it came to food, when he reached Cornelius he had his true “a-ha moment”! It became so clear that God’s word is for ALL, the gift of salvation through Jesus’ death on the cross was for ALL people. We can not let our differnces overwhelm us, but rather be unified on the what we do have in common and that is Christ and the truth of His word!

  3. It amazes me all the things God did to make sure nothing went wrong with this exchange between Peter and Cornelius. Both would be a little taken back from the interaction: Cornelius because he wouldn’t think himself worthy and Peter, for obvious reasons, they weren’t allowed in a Gentile’s house. So God sends Cornelius an angel to set him on the right path and sends Peter a vision. How quickly Peter will see that this vision has far more to do with than just food, but that God doesn’t show favoritism. Everyone can believe on Jesus. And just in case you wondered if this was true, God gives them the Holy Spirt, and to show that was the case, they speak in tongues. God was not leaving anything open to a different understanding of what is happening here considering how closed the Jews were the Gentiles and how desperately the Gentiles (particularly the God fearing ones) needed Jesus!

  4. More impressed with this centurion. Cornelius. He and all his family would devote and God-fearing. He gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. What opposition did he face? He represented Rome, but he has been conquered by the God of the Jews, a Godly and generous Roman soldier. You just Don’t read that in scripture. We get impressed by those that stand out and be different for God. Well here is a great example for us to step out of our comfort zones

  5. “God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right…” “everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” And so the Gentiles are welcomed into the kingdom of God by Jewish believers. And the Lord chose a faithful, devout person to deliver the message to the Jews, one who feared God, prayed often and gave to the poor. Those who follow the Lord in this way are blessed.

  6. The gospel is confirmed to be for both Jew and Gentile.
”While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
