Reading along with us in Esther and 2 Peter? Here’s today’s reading:
2 Peter 2 (NIV)
False Teachers and Their Destruction
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.…..Continue Reading

Believers in Jesus and unbelievers are very different, both in what identifies us (v.9) and how we live. What identifies us flows from God and is made possible through the work of Jesus on the cross. How we live is up to us, but the power and conviction of it should flow from all the things God has done in us and around us. To live our lives for God, we must rid ourselves of things (v.1 and 11) and embrace other things (v.2) and submit ourselves to God. We should recognize the good He has for us and the good we would then do in response. We are to submit ourselves to authority and not be surprised when those who don’t believe bring accusations against us. They will reject us just like they rejected Jesus….and sometimes they won’t even know why. But we should let our righteous lives speak for themselves and treat people the way God would and not the way they treat us. All the while knowing God has our back and it is for Him that we live anyway.
Vs. 4-6. So many people think that God will save all people because he’s such a loving God, but these verses prove that the last judgment will definitely happen. God will judge sin and an unrepentant, unbelieving sinner will not be able to escape. Vs 10-12. This time of year, people flock to places like Salem in Massachusetts and towns in our area where they have witch parades. In their ignorance they don’t understand the supernatural powers in the evil that can so easily entice human beings. Evil and Satan will be destroyed completely, but he’s very busy at this time of year. Evil and Satan will be destroyed completely, but he’s doing a pretty good job of rendering Christians complacent and ineffective.

False teaching always makes me think of social media. It is attractive, popular and full of lies. It makes us think we need and want things that we don’t. It makes us think honest people are bad and deceptive people are good. Certainly it is not the case for everything on social media, but it is a powerful tool Satan uses to distract us and fill us with false teaching. I always challenge myself to think have I spent more time in His word or doom scrolling today? We cannot expect to emerse oursleves in the ways of the world and then not fall victim to their behavior. We should think, act, and look different then the people in the world and we can only do that when we are standing on a firm foundation of God’s truth to know when what we are hearing is NOT from Him!
Great points, Kelly, I was thinking much the same.
So true Kelly, I’m praying for my sister who is so deceived by media spends and wastes most of her day on it, believing lies, and so filled with hate.
2 Peter 2
Our God is a God of Justice. The false prophets and their followers will not go unpunished. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done.
