Reading along with us in Esther and 2 Peter? Here’s today’s reading:
Esther 2 (NIV)
Esther Made Queen
1 Later when King Xerxes’ fury had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what he had decreed about her. 2 Then the king’s personal attendants proposed, “Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king. 3 Let the king appoint commissioners in every province of his realm to bring all these beautiful young women into the harem at the citadel of Susa.…..Continue Reading

How dangerous anger can be to jade our perspective and interactions and make us do things we wouldn’t do with a calmer and less offended mind. The king probably wanted to change what he said about Vashti, but he couldn’t and so His servants suggest this plan. So once again we learn the traditions of the Persians but even more so see the hand of God working through every aspect of Esther being chosen to enter the contest, her being granted favor with those charged with her care, her being liked better than others by behind-the-scenes people as well as the king himself. SO, it all comes together, and the king selects Ester as his bride. Next Mordecai reveals a plot against the king, so God has him in the right place at the right time and the event is chronicled for the king. God is never mentioned directly in Esther because His work is found all over the place.

Esther 2 : this is another example of how God works behind the scenes, so to speak. I have seen how God has worked in my life, as I’m sure so many others have also. I thank Him every day for directing me along the path to Him!
King Xerxes must have been a proud man, who thought very highly of himself, to go along with a plan to take young ladies from their families to fill his loneliness and satisfy himself. Esther had the ability to find favor with those who knew her. What qualities did she have that enabled her to do so; was it God given? We find out more about her character later on in the story. And Mordecai, because he frequently goes to the courtyard and sits at the kings gate, to find out how Esther was doing and what was happening to her. hears about a plot to kill the king. Because of his love and concern for Esther, he learns something that will have a huge impact upon his life later on in the story.
Esther is chosen as queen. I love how we see God’s work in the book of Esther and yet He is never mentioned. Reminds me of how many people in life don’t acknowledge God when things are good but they are also quick to blame God when things are not going well. God’s fingerprints are on all aspects of our lives and even when things don’t seem to be going well that doesn’t mean He isn’t working, He can use all situations for good. Maybe He is teaching us or someone we love something through our situation, maybe it is making a way for an even bigger plan like we see here with Vashti and Esther.
Esther, an orphaned Jewish girl, is placed strategically in the king’s harem and eventually in his palace.
God’s plan is evident, even when His name isn’t mentioned.
“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.”
