Rehoboam must have made himself feel pretty secure and then he let pride slip in and feel like maybe he didn’t need God as much. Sad when a disobediennt king leads an entire people into sin and now Judah was in harms way as a result of their disobedience. Luckily they saw the error of their ways and were quick to humble themselves and repent! Like any good parent, God did not completely let them off the hook; they were not destroyed but now they had a physical reminder of being a “slave to sin” as they lived in servitude. Sins have consequences that we have to live with sometimes even after repentance.
We can all learn a lesson here about what happens when we think we don’t need God anymore. We forget all the things God has done for us and sometimes don’t even know how He has been protecting us. And so we face a situation we cannot handle, that shows what was true all along, we do need God all the time. And so God is faithful to create/allow things to lead us back to Him, but is also faithful to be merciful and gracious to us. He doesn’t usually take away the consequences that have come about because of our decisions, but He helps us deal with them. So I guess it all comes down to whether we will learn things the easy way…or the hard way.

Oh to see the splendor and power of Israel brought low in a single generation. The shields of gold replaced by shields of bronze, the 12 tribes unified turned to a split with only 2 tribes remaining in Judah, and going from having the surrounding tribes and nations as servants to being a servant themselves to the Egyptians.
Devotion to God or lack thereof can make or break a nation. But God always shows mercy to those willing to humble themselves.
