1 Kings 2 (NIV)
David’s Charge to Solomon
1 When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
2“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, 3 and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands,……Continue Reading

David before he dies tells Solomon to follow the Lord and to walk in His wisdom and then he will be blessed and other generations after him. He also tells Solomon to act wisely in regard to those that have wronged him. Both Joab and Shimel for the sins they have done. David held his peace when both of them wronged him and now it is left up to Solomon to make decisions about them. On both of them Solomon showed restraint. It wasn`t until after Adoniah tried to take the kingdom again by asking to marry Abishag who ministered to David before he died that Joab feared for his life. Solomon knew what Adoniah was trying to do and had him killed. Adoniah showed his evil heart. If he hadn`t tried to do this he probably wouldn`t had died, at least not yet. Even Shimel was given a chance to live but he had to stay in the town that he lived in. After three years he broke his word and left the city. He then was killed. Solomon also showed restraint to Abiathar and let him live because he suffered along with David before. But he did take him out of the priesthood. Maybe many of them thought that there wouldn`t be consequences from their sins. But in time it came to pass. The lord is patient and wants all men to come to repentance. But that doesn`t mean that there isn`t consequences from sin. We all affect each other and when someone sins, we all feel the results of it. Maybe not directly but we do feel it. God bless us all as we seek Him and serve Him.
David’s last instruction to his son, Solomon, is wise and clear. Follow God and deal justly with people. They had much unfinished business and Solomon took the advice of his father and settled many of those issues. Joab is a unique character in that he was fiercely loyal to David and yet still took matters into his own hands for reasons he saw fit. His heart was not for God and did not trust God’s timing even when instructed to do so by David and as a result the consequence was death. We see many cases of justice coming to those who led by their own strengths rather than following God’s plan and path and paid with their lives for that sin. A great reminder of what can happen when we charge ahead of God instead of walking with Him!
1Kings 2
Psalms 5; Proverbs 14; 1 Kings 1-2; Isaiah 55
”“I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; that the Lord may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’“
I Kings 2:2-4 NKJV
