Numbers 17 (NIV)

God makes it clear beyond a doubt here that He has chosen Aaron as the priestly authority. His staff not only sprouted but became fruitful and we know what God ordains will be fruitful. No wonder the people panicked after seeing this, knowing what happened to Korah and those that questioned God’s leaderaship before I am sure their own doubt was cause for alarm that they might be swallowed up as well.
Numbers 17
After much grumbling against Moses and Aaron, and particularly Aaron this last round, God puts together a test to confirm HIs choice of Aaron. And He goes above and beyond as to what Aaron’s staff produces to show He is God’s man. Now what is interesting is that Aaron by no means is perfect. And yet by grace God recognizes the position He has put Him in and remains committed to him. He might be able to change what role He has, but the people cannot..and the staff is used as a message to all who would rebel…don’t mess with the people God puts in authority.
