We have another personal letter here from John to someone he was connected to in discipleship or mentoring and he encourages him in good things and warns him about those who work against the truth. Once again the truth and love are emphasized. What is criticized is self centeredness and gossiping in a way that comes against John. It is important for those who gossip to be called out and confronted. It is fine to address a leader with an issue, but it is never appropriate to speak behind their back. It becomes a very divisive element in any group of people…but John’s concern here is for the church. It is interesting in both of these short letters, he writes briefly and mentions preferring talking about it face to face, which is a far better means of communication.
