2 Samuel 6 (NIV)

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
1 David again brought together all the able young men of Israel—thirty thousand. 2 He and all his men went to Baalah in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim on the ark.……Continue Reading

  1. This is a difficult chapter for sure, but God cares about holiness, things of His being distinct, and He goes this far to show just how important it is to Him. The greater fault here is the ark is not being carried by priests, which the law required. Uzzah was also a son of Abinadab and the ark was at Abinadab’s after the Philistines and Jews had suffered due to its misuse. It had been at his house for 20 years and its holiness must have been reenforced in that time. And so Uzzah should have known better. And you just got to love Obed Edom, the least known hero of the Bible, who takes the ark into his house because David is afraid to take it into his own. And God blesses him because that is what God’s presence does, but also to show David that His goodness hasn’t changed even though He protected His holiness. And the final point of the chapter, is don’t let anyone else curb your enthusiasm about God and the worship of Him…especially by self important people that care more about the external appearance than what is in the heart.

  2. Defintely agree with Pastor that this is difficult to read. Someone trying to catch the ark from falling winds up struck down dead. However, the importance was in the way it was being moved to start. Like the detailed, specific instructions for building it, God had instructions for moving the ark and they were not being followed. David’s fear of it after this incident is a good way to think about our own fear of the Lord. We aren’t afraid of Him but rather we acknowledge the power He has and we humbly respect that power. We also see the importance of following His instructions because when we do things our way it only leads to death and destruction.

  3. David (and Uzzah) learn a hard lesson, in that God and the Ark are not to be handled as common. I think of the idols of other nations that are fashioned by man’s hands…and have eyes that cannot see, etc. I do understand David’s fear though, certainly his intent was not to be disrespectful.

Once David finally gets over it, he brings the Ark home with reverence, although according to Michal, undignified.
”So David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.”“
    ‭‭II Samuel‬ ‭6‬:‭21‬-‭22‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
I love David’s come back dig to her sarcasm.
