2 Samuel 2 (NIV)

David Anointed King Over Judah
1 In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.
The Lord said, “Go up.”
David asked, “Where shall I go?”
“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.

  1. What a long, sad, and really unnecessary war between those who stood with Saul and those who stood with David. By no surprise, David’s men were victorious because David was God’s choosen to be king. Abner pushed this “son” of Saul who was likely an illegitimate child just to try to keep a foothold over the throne but this was not God’s plan and therefore was a failure out of the gate but so many had to die for them to get that message. I guess that isn’t all that far off from the world today fighting against God’s ways to live. We have brought so much death into our lives as a result of doing things that are contrary to His plans, His ways, and with His guidance. When man tries to go it alone we end up making messes similar to this chapter but nice to see God is always victorious in the end and He will always be!

  2. A sad chapter indeed. I would have liked to see David consult God about killing the Amalekite as he does here. It is always best to access God’s wisdom for decisions we make. And we should be very careful pressing our will for the sake of power and protecting poor reputation (Saul’s) as Abner does here. We should also watch out for the hubris of youth (though many of us here don’t have it any more) disregarding the wisdom of the old. We can imagine Abner not having a choice, kill or be killed. But he is the one who created this unnecessary conflict…so all this could have been avoided. He is a little hypocritical, then, to say stop killing fellow Israelites when that would be the reason for him not to raise a battle line in the first place. It just goes to show we should follow God’s will and His ways all the time, not just when it fits our agenda…and we never press our agenda over His!

  3. ”And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out and met them by the pool of Gibeon. So they sat down, one on one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool.“
    ‭‭II Samuel‬ ‭2‬:‭13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

This looks like an opportunity for a diplomatic discussion, nope!
