  1. It is very difficult to have your good intentions misinterpreted as evil and threatening. And yet this is what happened to David. One wonders why the new king of the Ammonites wouldn’t have just apologized, instead he hires an army. It is always best to seek understanding when there is misunderstanding rather than assuming the worst and then acting on it. We also need to watch who it is that we are getting advice from. But everyone learns in the chapter that it is a bad idea to come against David and Israel because God is on their side. It is important to recognize that God is on our side as well and will fight our battles in the exact way that He should.

  2. Hanun, the king of the Ammonites, definitely needs to find better counsel around him. What was intended to be a gift to offer condolences was recieved so horribly wrong! Without any other consideration Hanun listened to those around him and assumed there was no way David would just be showing kindnes and started a battle where the Ammonites would lose many men. How important is good communication led be God’s wisdom and discernment! What we hear, how we receive it, and of course who we are listening to can, as we see here, make a huge impact on the situations we experience in life.

  3. David sends men to comfort Hanun and he shames them! What bad advisors! Even if they were sent to spy out the land, it will certainly backfire if you so grossly mistreat David’s men. It didn’t work out well for the people of Ammon.
