2 Peter 3 (NIV)

The Day of the Lord
1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires..............Continue Reading

  1. Peter closes with yet another reminder that God will return one day despite what doubters may say. He reminds us again of all God has accomplished and is capable of doing so we may resist the idea of those doubters. But most of all we must remain vigilant in our walk and in our faith and as always be prepared!
Funny the reference to time in verse 8 “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.”
We are so impatient and yet have no comprehension of true eternity! People place so much value on the maybe 100 years we have here on earth with no regard to the fact that this is a blink of an eye compared to eternity. Short sighted people will live as a slave to sin to “enjoy” their time here and forget that how we live here, what we believe here can and will greatly effect our eternity after this life is over!

  2. Peter reminds us that God did destroy the world once already with a mighty flood.
God talked about a bonfire where on judgement day where all the ungodly men will perish. While we are waiting for Christ’s return. Again it is said to grow strong
spiritually to keep up just getting to know God more. Until the return of Christ.

  3. 14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

Another good reminder for me of what kind of life I ought to live. To be at peace with God – that should be my goal.

  4. Never thought I would see the days we are living in now. The last few years has seen the clock of God moving much faster. Never thought I would see the days when I read in the last days scoffers will say where is this coming. I can understand why some would say that As you look around the world today. Peter reminds us of this coming and that the earth will be burned up by fire. Gods purpose is not destroying but re creating. For myself and I believe most would agree. As we see things deteriorating. To spend time in the word at this time is priceless. So that we will not be carried away by error. Often think. I’m ok. I’m secure. Not without the word of God every day!!!!!!!

  5. Reading this after todays teaching from Pastor about the significance of the reminder stones that Joshua and the tribes of Israel erected. Lots of reminders mentioned here as well.
    Peter writes reminders:
I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of REMINDER), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior
“For this they willfully FORGET: that by the word…..”
“But, beloved, do NOT FORGET this one thing,…”

  6. Another thing I wanted to point out about this is some details we learn about creation and the earth. It appears that the heavens were old and the earth was a watery planet in water atmosphere (the earth standing out of water and in the water) – verse 5. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” – Genesis 1.
It was then destroyed by water. “by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.” – verse 6
By God’s word, He formed the heavens and earth (does “of old” mean that they were old, or created old.)
By the same word they are not preserved for fire.

“For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

  7. In spite of what the world thinks, convinced of the regularity of life that things will remain the same, the earth will be destroyed in the same way it was created, by God’s word. Those outside the gospel will be judged and believers will be saved. And God is not being slow in executing His plan, but is being patient to give all people a chance to be saved. But since in the end all that God is and has said will be shown to be true, we should live in a way that is pleasing to Him now. The pull of the world and the temptation of sin will continue to the end, but in the end will be shown to be false. Peter makes clear that that should make our choices clear to be holy and godly and avoid the corruption that is in the world. It makes sense, doesn’t it?

  8. The fact that I understand this and it makes perfect sense gives me a feeling of well being, but I can’t figure why others don’t get this, but as I type this it comes to me that those who aren’t exposed to the gospel and seeking answers to the big question of “why are we here and what’s my purpose?” Are infants in an adult world, infants caught up in their immediate needs not being able to see beyond themselves, then I ask the question of myself, “ will I remember this and other verses throughout my day?” Am I being a disciple and telling others what I know about the gospel?”
