The Shunammite’s Land Restored

  1. Another sad chapter to see king after king do evil in the eyes of the Lord and lead people to sin, death, and destruction. Such a powerful reminder that as leaders of anything great and small we are to lead with integrity and by example. So sad to see so many overcome by the sins of pride, greed, and lack of self control when they are in a leadership position. Unfortunately, all still true about leaders of many countries, even our own, even today!

  2. Elisha’s influence is seen in the kindness shown to the Shunammite women and the fact that he speaks prophecy in a foreign land about how the Arameans will cause destruction for the Israelites. As we follow God and people see good and powerful things flowing out of our lives our influence will grow as well. And it is sad that the next 2 kings of Judah follow the evil ways of Ahab of Israel rather than the godly influence of Jehosophat of Judah. It is a reminder that association with ungodly people corrupts godly character and how important it is for the next generations to following the pattern of obedience established in former generations. There is a shared responsibility for one generation to model and teach the truth and value of God (which Jehosophat had done, except for associating with the kings of Israel) and the following generation to adhere to what has been passed down. When this does not happen, then bad things will flow from that generation not following God and God’s hand will not be with them., except for the grace that He will periodically show.
