2 Kinngs 22 (NIV)

The Book of the Law Found
1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother’s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed completely the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left.……Continue Reading

  1. Josiah finally gets it right! He repairs the temple and when he read the book of the law he tears his robes realizing how far off the mark they have been as a people. He doesn’t get defensive, try to hide it, or make excuses. He immediately seeks God and asks what now, how do we fix this. I love that God sees the humble, repentant heart of Josiah but also holds the people accountable for all they had done. God is a forgiving God, but our actions have consequences! The hope is that we learn and grow and mature but the things we do or have done start ripple effects of sin that we will need to be accountable for.

  2. I was so taken by Josiah’s conviction and courage at such a young age that I named my son after him. Even before the book of the law was found, he started repairing the temple…most likely broken down because the 50 plus year reign of Josiah’s dad. And it is in the context of the repairs that this book is found (believed to be Deuteronomy). It is sad and good that it was probably hidden away so it was not destroyed by Manasseh. May we all respond with the same level of conviction that Josiah does here when we read the word and recognize the ways we are not following. And yet God’s word to Josiah is that Judah’s disobedience has gone too far and so his turning to Him will save him from disaster, but not the nation. It goes to show that we too can go too far and still face the discipline that our sin deserves even though God forgives us and loves us.

  3. Yay, another king who does what’s right in the eyes of the Lord! His mother’s name was Jedidah. Because her name is mentioned, I suspect she was the one who influenced him in the knowledge of the Lord. And Josiah is deeply affected when he is given God’s Book; when he is made aware of the evil history of the land he rules. And another woman in this story, Huldah, prophesies about what will happen. Josiah’s faithfulness will be rewarded. He will not see the disaster that will fall upon the land. In the midst of God’s wrath, the one who is loyal to the Lord “will not see the disaster that will fall upon this place.” Let us remember that the Lord will protect and provide for his people when we see all the conflict, chaos and destruction that is taking place all around us. So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Hebrews 13:6

  4. Josiah finds the book of the law. I envisioned a dusty tome unopened for generations. Look at the idolatry of the people, this is what happens when Gods word no longer has influence.
