2 Kings 14(NIV)

Amaziah King of Judah
1 In the second year of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father David had done.……Continue Reading

  1. Amaziah tried to do what was right but was certainly not fully surrendered to God. He acted properly in the punishment of those that had killed his father not killing their sons but he still allowed the people to sacrifice in the high places. When he saw a great victory over the Edomities he made the classic mistake many of us do and pride set in causing him to pick a bigger fight. This wasn’t God’s desire or plan this was just his ego and the end result showed that clearly!
Jeroboam, also did evil in the sight of the Lord, but his reign was different. God decided to show mercy to the people and therefore they saw peace and prosperity during his time as king. But we can be sure that this was God’s choice no result of this earthly, evil king.

  2. As the Proverb goes, pride comes before a fall. Although Amaziah did right by following God, he let his victories get to his head. We can always find a reason to be humble when we follow God recognizing that all we are, have and accomplish comes from Him. And sometimes even ungodly people can give good advice that we should follow. We should just be more discerning when it does. And God is so gracious and faithful to grant victory to Israel even though Jeroboam II was not following Him. And we shouldn’t miss the reference here to Jonah of the Book of Jonah fame, which shows he was an active prophet in Israel and did more than the account found in the book that bares his name….

  3. I thought it interesting that Jonah is mentioned and wondered if it was the same Jonah.
Also despite unfaithful kings, God is still listening to the people and remembering His promises. Makes me encouraged that with all that is going on with politics, government, the rich and powerful, God listens to those who trust in Him, those who cry out to Him.
