2 Kings 1 (NIV)

The Lord’s Judgment on Ahaziah
1 After Ahab’s death, Moab rebelled against Israel. 2 Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, “Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.”……Continue Reading

  1. Such a dramatic way for Ahaziah to hear in person the truth that was already told to him. Clearly Ahaziah was not a follower of God and sought to find answers to his issues from pagan sources but God intervenes and the truth comes to him anyway. But I suppose as so many hear truth that they don’t want to hear, he wanted Elijah in front of him likely to try to make him change his answer or just shut him up all together. You would think after the first disrespectful group ends us in a ball of flame the second would approach differently but unfortunately it wasn’t until the third group that they figured this must be the one true God we are dealing with! Sad that all of this comes to avoid a truth that can’t be avoided and Ahaziah still dies and does so still not knowing God. We must pray for those who hear the truth of God to be open to really hear and let it tranform their lives so they don’t end up like Ahaziah!

  2. When people are not seeking God, they will search everywhere but God to get help. Ahaziah follows in his father’s evil ways and so when faced with trouble has to consult false prophets of false gods. But Elijah intervenes to give it to him straight through those who would not otherwise know. And when Ahaziah wants to send for Elijah to hear it right from him, Elijah has a point to make that it is one thing to call someone a man of God, it is another thing to believe it. It takes the third try for someone to get the point. But the message doesn’t change for Ahaziah because of the evil path he took and he has no one to fill his evil shoes.

  3. Ahaziah seeks counsel of a fake god, God, the true God, takes notice and sends Elijah to warn him and answer his inquiry. It is humorous and sad that he seems to think he can change the message by exhibiting his own authority. The third captain gets the message: ”Again, he sent a third captain of fifty with his fifty men. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him, and said to him: “Man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight.“
