1 Samuel 22 (NIV)
David at Adullam and Mizpah
1 David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. 2 All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. 1 Samuel 22
As David is on the outs with the king, he draws and welcomes those who are on the outs as well. These will become his mighty men, skilled warriors and very dedicated to David because he accepted them in their broken state. May we also be willing to meet people where they are and see value in them that others do not see. Now Saul on the other hand gets even worse and is just filled with jealousy and rage. How evil it is for him to kill innocent people because they did not rat out David to him. It just goes to show how self centered a person can become and thereby do anything to satisfy their position. And yet how courageous Ahimelek is to defend the truth and thereby defend David in the presence of such warped thinking. And then Saul has to get a foreigner to do his dirty work. And how gracious David is to take responsibility for the death of the priests because he didn’t take care of Doeg the Edomite. But what a tough decision to make earlier to kill him. It would have seemed unjust earlier, but seeing what he did, you regret you didn’t. It is so good to have God available to guide us in decisions because He knows the future as well as the present.
God is teaching David to learn to trust Him in the midst of danger. Even in his desperate hour in his cave of refuge, God sends to him the 400 hundred men that will now be by his side. Men in their own desperate times that God is using as well. It is in these dark times that we should never pull away but lean in and be used by God. Saul on the other hand is spiraling without the presence of God in his life. Such evil to murder all these people.
David steps up and take responsibility for his part in these deaths. His presence and his deceptions put Ahimelech’s family at risk in the first place.

Saul becomes darker and darker in thought and feed. What an evil thing to kill all the priests.
