Reading along with us in 1 Samuel and Mark? Here’s today’s reading:

1 Samuel 21 (NIV)

David at Nob
1 David went to Nob, to Ahimelek the priest. Ahimelek trembled when he met him, and asked, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”
2 David answered Ahimelek the priest, “The king sent me on a mission and said to me, ‘No one is to know anything about the mission I am sending you on.’ As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place.…..Continue Reading

  1. This is not an easy part of scripture to just start reading in the middle. David is acting insane. Living with Philistine’s. Saul has murdered over 80 priest not sure what’s going on here.

    1. Not what I was referring to…so try again…It was said to a character played by RI’s Mandy Patinkin

  2. Ok guys, I have no idea what you are talking about…. : ) David lost his trust in the Lord when he acted like a madman. Did whatever he could think of at the time because he was very much afraid of the King of Gath. Letting his fear get the best of him and looking very foolish as a result.

  3. With David on the run from Saul, he resorts to questionable behavior. It is easy to do when enemies and challenges surround. And yet that is the best time to pray and seek God in all His wisdom, power and comfort. But David here is telling half truths and eating consecrated bread. It just shows his level of desperation. And Jesus uses this incident to teach the Pharisees a lesson. David takes it a step even further as he is now amongst foreigners. And as Shelly said, David is relying on what he can come up with here rather than trusting God and seeking His direction.

And I am surprised no one got “The Princess Bride” reference. A great and clean movie if you haven’t seen it.

  4. Something that is so important about David is that he is always relatable. While he is so significant in God’s plans and a great man of faith, the Bible also shows us his times of weakness and when he stumbles. I do believe this is because we can see that a mistake will have consequence but God is always waiting for us to come back to Him and that He can use us regardless. This chapter is one of those times for David that his fear and desperation take him off track and cause him to make some questionable choices.

And Pastor, I got the refernce right away and the fact that so many didn’t is “inconceivable!” 😉

  5. I’m not sure what the proper or “trusting in God” behavior would be in this situation. David is writing Psalms throughout his flight from Saul. Was it wrong to eat the bread? Was it wrong to lie when someone is trying to kill you? (Rahab lied for the spies…and I know there are other examples.) I’m not sure acting like a crazy person to evade capture/death is wrong…
Misdirection and intrigue are used in warfare.
Perhaps David should have fled elsewhere. Regardless of his actions, he learns many lessons from his behavior. And hopefully we do too.

  6. David wrote Psalm 56 at this time: just a few verses from it:
”Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me? Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God; I will render praises to You, For You have delivered my soul from death. Have You not kept my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the light of the living?“
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭56‬:‭3‬-‭4‬, ‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NKJV

Also I understand the Princess Bride quote of “inconceivable” but you said “go back to the beginning”, so I wasn’t sure what you we’re referring to. ‬
