1 Kings 19 (NIV)

Elijah Flees to Horeb
1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”……Continue Reading

  1. Nothing like the presence of the Lord to drive away fear! And Elijah’s response to Jezebel’s threat shows we are all subject to fear and despair. But how important it is to address those things with the knowledge we have of God. He doesn’t drive away every aspect of how we internalize and react to the things of life…it is not like emotions don’t matter….but they do not need to control or dictate our behavior and God has peace for us in the midst of them. And how neat is it that God is not in all the places we expect Him to be…all the loud and powerful places. No, He is found in the still small voice that asks the question again, causes Elijah to really consider why he has reacted to this situation like this, and then gives direction for next steps that show that God is aware of what is going on and He will manage it with the people He is putting in place. It is kind of neat that Elijah is anointing a foreign king. He is sovereign over them too!

  2. Elijah finds himself in a bad way and we can all identify with that, maybe not that people are plotting our death but certainly have fallen upon tough times and difficult situations. I love how God interacts with him here. First, He lets him rest and catch his breath. Then, He provides for Elijah’s physical need to eat, knowing that rest and food are so important for our clear thinking. Next, He allows Elijah some time to vent it out and just unload how much his current situation stinks. Finally, God responds in a still small voice. After the wind, thunder, and earthquakes that remind us of His power, its just that gentle whisper to remind Elijah who is actually in control. The One who can have His way in the wind and the thunder and all the bad situations of our lives is with him and this gets Elijah back on track. So cool to see God take the time to meet us where we are, provide for our needs, and restore us in these times of hurt and pain and doubt.

  3. Elijah is at his wits end. Even when he thinks he is the last of Gods prophets, God Himself feeds and encourages him and assures him He has reserved a remnant.
”Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”“
    ‭‭I Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭18‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
