1 Kings 18 (NIV)

Elijah and Obadiah
1 After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe in Samaria,……Continue Reading

  1. This is one of my favorite accounts in the Bible. It starts with Obadiah understandably lacking faith in the presence of all the threats that have come from Ahab. But he should have asked Elijah more detailed information rather than expressing all this doubt. But then we move on to the great faith of Elijah throwing down the gauntlet for God and giving the people a stark picture of the difference between the true God and the idols they have been worshipping. And I just love how he taunts the prophets of Baal, exposing the lie of what they believe about him. And then Elijah doubles, even triples down on making it more difficult for God to burn the sacrifice. And yet with one prayer, the God of glory shows up in spades and burns up everything with His fire. It is a practical expression of His reality, His power and His desire to be known and followed. And the people briefly get it…if only their faith in God was more substantive. May we maintain our faith even if God doesn’t show up in this way. But it would be nice if He did…….let the fire fall, let the wind blow, let Your glory come down!

  2. Wow the power of God displayed so evidently and the god of Baal exposed as a fraud. Love that Elijah takes every opportunity to poke the bear a bit so there would be NO confusion here which god was powerful. God despite all of the logic of man sent fire and consumed the drenched sacrifice and the people saw it with their own eyes. Would be nice to always experience God’s power in such an obvious way but real faith comes from knowing He is there even when there is no obvious evidence and never forget that He is still a God of miracles!

  3. Psalm 20; 1 Kings 18; Zephaniah 1-3

“Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long are you going to struggle with the two choices? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him so much as a word.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭18‬:‭21‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬

How often we allow ourselves to fall into uncertainty on certain matters as a sort of self-justification for sin. When God commands us in our lives, let us follow him in obedience instead of being indecisive.

  4. ”And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.” Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”“
    ‭‭I Kings‬ ‭18‬:‭36‬-‭39‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
