1 Kings 14 (NIV)

Ahijah’s Prophecy Against Jeroboam
1 At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became ill, 2 and Jeroboam said to his wife, “Go, disguise yourself, so you won’t be recognized as the wife of Jeroboam. Then go to Shiloh. Ahijah the prophet is there—the one who told me I would be king over this people. 3 Take ten loaves of bread with you, some cakes and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.” 4 So Jeroboam’s wife did what he said and went to Ahijah’s house in Shiloh.........Continue Reading

  1. Such a sad end for Solomon’s sons and all over disobedience and idolatry! Such wealth and wisdom squandered away so quickly all because they did not put their trust in God and lead His people seeking His counsel. Instead of keeping Him first they let pride or popular interfere with their reign as kings and ultimately their demise.

  2. I continued in Luke chapter 10 this morning, reading about Jesus sending out the 72 men, the parable of the Good Samaritan and visiting Martha and Mary.

“I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, but they could not, and to hear what you hear, but they did not.””

  3. Jeroboam acts like many here thinking he can currie God’s favor in his time of need after doing all the things he has done to defy Him and lead the people of Israel in idol worship. It is almost funny that he thinks he can pull one over on God’s prophet, but instead of coming in repentance, he brings gifts/bribes. But the jig is up. God’s patience has worn thin…after several attempts to draw Jeroboam to Him. And Jeroboam receives the consequences of his bad decisions: his son will die and he will be cut off. And unfortunately Rehoboam does no better. Judah defies God as well and God shows His dissatisfaction by allowing the elements of the temple to be taken to Egypt. When will the Jews ever learn….

  4. Jeroboam tries to solidify his claim to the kingdom by currying a prophesy through trickery. God gives His true prophet insight into the messenger, and the message.

I think it is interesting that God says of David, “David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes.” It is comforting that, although David sinned greatly, he is still noted as one who did right and followed God “with all his heart.” The key seems to be the heart. Solomon’s “heart” was drawn away by his wives after other gods. This is not to say that as long as our heart is right with God that we can sin all we want! Actions are an indicator of the true intents of the heart. As we read through these books, clearly the Israelites and their kings worship other gods, that is one’s heart leaving God for another.
