Psalms 60-61 (NIV)

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A miktam of David. For teaching. When he fought Aram Naharaim and Aram Zobah and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
1 You have rejected us, God, and burst upon us;
you have been angry—now restore us!
2 You have shaken the land and torn it open;
mend its fractures, for it is quaking.
3 You have shown your people desperate times;
you have given us wine that makes us stagger.

  1. It is important to be aware of where we stand with God, and when we sense His disfavor on us, the only thing we can do is cry out in repentance and cry for mercy. David senses something is wrong in Israel and he comes to the One who can help. He is our refuge and our strength, a stronghold we can rely on. But He cannot condone or approve of disobedience so we must humble ourselves and confess our sin and seek the way back to Him. David knows how dependent Israel is on God’s help, so he must do what he can to make it right. These Psalms are written in that spirit and show us one of the greatest things about God: He always offers a way back to Him, always a way of forgiveness, humility, confession and repentance. May we keep our road to Him clear.

  2. “O God, You have cast us off;
    You have broken us down;
    You have been displeased;
    Oh, restore us again!
    You have made the earth tremble;
    You have broken it;
    Heal its breaches, for it is shaking.
    You have shown Your people hard things;
    You have made us drink the wine of confusion.

    You have given a banner to those who fear You,
    That it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah
    That Your beloved may be delivered,
    Save with Your right hand, and hear me.”
