Reading along with us in some selections from Psalms and Proverbs? Here’s today’s reading:
Proverbs 19 (NIV)
1 Better the poor whose walk is blameless
than a fool whose lips are perverse.
2 Desire without knowledge is not good—
how much more will hasty feet miss the way!
3 A person’s own folly leads to their ruin,
yet their heart rages against the Lord.
4 Wealth attracts many friends,
18Discipline your children, for in that there is hope;
do not be a willing party to their death.
19A hot-tempered person must pay the penalty;
rescue them, and you will have to do it again.
20Listen to advice and accept discipline,
and at the end you will be counted among the wise.
These verses spoke to me today because it is not our natural inclination to be wise in our decision making and discipline is so important. We must teach our children God’s ways but we are still learning ourselves through God’s discipline. We must be open to receive God’s direction and we must teach it to our children as well!
I really like Proverbs. Not to overgeneralize, but doesn’t it seem that if we are careful to consider God before we act we will be okay or even better. The flip side is true as well. If we do not consider God, we probably won’t like the results. When I act on my own, I shudder and spit like an old Model T.
Man the psalms are just loaded with wisdom on making choices to better yourself and be happy. Few verses stuck out in proverbs 19. Especially after the last 4 years of political attacks. Verse 5. Wish that would come alive. Verse 9. Same. Feeling blessed I have never known vs 13. Great read!!
Proverbs 19
Proverbs 19
Proverbs 19-20
The fear of the Lord leads to life,
And he who has it will abide in satisfaction;
He will not be visited with evil.
Better a poor man whose walk is blameless then a fool whose lips are perverse. And yet the poor man is mentioned a couple of times in terms of losing friends and people being drawn to wealth. May that certainly not be true of us.
It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way. It is also interesting that giving a false witness will not go unpunished is mentioned twice. How foundational honesty is in any relationship, organization and society.
A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.
Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. Amen!
Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.
Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. And good thing too!
