Reading along with us in Ruth, Proverbs, & Psalms? Here’s today’s reading:

Proverbs 13 (NIV)

1 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.
2 From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things,
but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.
3 Those who guard their lips preserve their lives,
but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.….Continue Reading

  1. So much good instruction in Proverbs. Always that strong theme of words, the ones we use, the ones we hear, and the ones we believe. Can we take instruction, can we share instruction in love, and do we know when words are coming from God or from the world. This verse stood out to me today…
24 Whoever spares the rod hates their children,
but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.
So common today for parents to want to be “friends” with their children but true love and respect comes from our correction. Letting a child run amok is doing them no favors. We show we love them by teaching truth, preventing mistakes through rules and expectations. Teaching them the importance of instruction and our words, saying what we mean and meaning what we say.

  2. In verse 14 we are reminded that the teaching of the wise brings about the fountain of life and brings people out of the snares of death. We as believers in Christ are to have the wisdom of God in us and therefore be able to share Christ with others so that they won`t go to Hell. Where do we get wisdom? God will give it to us if we ask Him. But we also need to spend time in His word and follow Him in our daily lives. Another verse that stood out to me was verse 20. We are to surround ourselves with wise men that we could also walk in wisdom. God bless.

  3. There is a lot of instruction here about the difference between the righteous and the fool. The righteous are wise and make godly decisions and listen to counsel and are self controlled in their actions. Therefore their lives are blessed and they live in the benefits of their good decisions. But a fool just follows his desires and does whatever gratifies them. He doesn’t listen to counsel, but just blindly squanders what he has on his passions until he has none. It ultimately leads to their destruction and others are not benefited from their lives….And we need to watch where our hope and longing are placed…in things of this world that fade and are inconsistent, or in God who is eternal and is always consistent.

  4. My takeaways from the reading: Guard our lips, think before we speak. Let the light of the Holy Spirit that is within us shine brightly, do not snuff it out with sinful speech and actions. Walk with people who are wise, stay away from foolish people. Love our children and be careful to discipline them.
