  1. What a personal letter, addressing a personal matter that gives a window into the person and ministry of Paul. It is understood that Onesimus was a slave of Philemon who did something wrong (stole some money)and then when out on the run. In his running, he runs into Paul (not literally) and becomes a believer. Paul then disciples him and they become fairly close. Knowing that God doesn’t like relational loose ends, Paul looks to reconcile his two friends. Now because relational things don’t really work when they are forced, Paul shows the better part of wisdom and a measure of humility to ask Philemon to take Onesimus back rather then forcing him by apostolic authority. He does well setting the plate for why Philemon should take him back. Onesimus has not only become a believer and therefore a brother of Philemon’s, he also has Philemon’s servants heart and he has become useful and dear to Philemon’s dear friend Paul. Paul also shows that he is certainly willing to be a bit direct and press his “privilege” by saying if you don’t take him back for him, than do it for me…..and by the way, you owe me. It will also make me happy in Jesus, and don’t forget, I’m in prison for Him.

So once again God shows a side of human relationship and how they can function by using real people and real situations that they face.
