  1. This second census showed some losses and some gains in the tribes. In fairness God gave land inheritances based on the tribes size, however, no one from the original census were counted in this census and as God had commanded none of them went into the promised land.

  2. As part of preparation for taking over the promised land, a census of this new generation needed to be taken mainly to identify who could serve in the army as well as determining how much land would be distributed to each tribe. It certainly prepares the people for what is to come and presumes they will actually enter the promised land this time. It was interesting to me that part of the census was to reenforce some of the primary people and events that happened and the Bible is not shy to talk about the bad things that happened. It reenforces to me what we will be remembered for, good things or bad things….things of God or the things of the flesh….

  3. 62All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them.
63These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho. 64Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. 65For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
