John 16 (NIV)

1 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me...........Continue Reading

  1. The glorious raising after 3 days Jesus is speaking about is so hard for them to understand but will be so amazing when they experience it. I love the childbirth analogy Jesus uses here regarding the terrible pain of giving birth to just seconds later forgetting it because of the joy of seeing your child! What a true joy they experienced seeing Jesus raised after the pain of watching Him crucified!

  2. 28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
29Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32“A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

  3. What a gift the Holy Spirit is and here Jesus explains that He will send Him to the disciples and all believers by extension. He will be God within us and take from Jesus and provide the resources for us. He will also have a ministry to the world, convicting them of their need for God and the state of judgement that satan’s kingdom is in. What wisdom God has for providing One who would come alongside us to help us live the Christian life, especially for these disciples who would miss Jesus presence with them.

But Jesus’ mention of Him going away so the Holy Spirit could come causes the disciples to wonder what He is talking about. Once again I bet what Jesus says here was much clearer after He dies, was raised and was ascended. And how could the disciples understand since it was not part of their experience….but Jesus changed all that…..

  4. Jesus tells the disciples that they will face trouble, but He also gives them hope.

He will send the Holy Spirit.
He will guide us into all truth.
He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
