Reading along with us in Job? Here’s today’s reading:
Job 34 (NIV)
1 Then Elihu said:
2“Hear my words, you wise men;
listen to me, you men of learning.
3 For the ear tests words
as the tongue tastes food.…..Continue Reading

Job 34
Well Elihu takes the gloves off and accuses Job of associating with evil. He is right to talk about God being aware of all that happens and it is to Him that all would be accountable and that He is willing to forgive and restore people who confess and repent. He does well to defend God in all the He is and can do. But he is wrong to accuse Job, and like the others, assume that Job is going through what he is because he has done something wrong. Even to call Job rebellious after all he has been through, in honor to God and as a means of His glory….a test that has come from satan and by extension, God.
Job 33 & 34
The takeaway here is to think of our suffering moments and events as a time for learning and correction. Rather than questioning and accusing God, we should be submitting. God is always just! We should never be in a position to question that. Elihu makes this clear to Job.
We are all susceptible to these times and it would be far greater and more beneficial to us if we would use these times to learn and let our faith take hold.
Elihu is not kind and compassionate when he speaks to his friend who is suffering. He insinuates that Job is wicked and God repays everyone for what they have done; he brings on them what their conduct deserves. He is wrong in saying that. Our God is a God of mercy and grace; he does not give us the punishment that we deserve for our wrongdoings. And Job is a man who is blameless and upright, he fears God and shuns evil
Like Elihu is expressing here, we all have a little “reap what you sow mentality” when dealing with others. However, we often see bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad. We trust God to be in control of it all, just like He is in control of what is happening to Job, and often we will not understand why. Free will, the evil of others, and the sinful nature of man all play a part in the heartaches of this world. Innocent children abused, women victimized, cancers spreading from the poisons we allow into our lives all seem “unfair” and yet God is still in control. He has not turned a blind eye but rather He is the hope for the hurting, the peace for the anguished, and He is working even when we don’t see Him or even understand what is happening. He is just and He works all things out for good for those who believe but we cannot assume it will happen the way we think or expect.
Well said, Kelly!
Good points, Kelly.
I feel like this is akin to arguing the 5 points with a Calvinist….I agree with many of your points, but not your conclusions.
