Take along some of the elders of the people and of the priests 2 and go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. There proclaim the words I tell you, 3 and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah and people of Jerusalem. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Listen! 1. And yet God always remains faithful; he will maintain a remnant and return them to Jerusalem. And the best news yet, He will come as Jesus Christ to pay for ALL these horrible sins and give salvation to all who believe.

  2. It’s almost as if this is like the official announcement of what God’s plans are and why He is bringing them about. Jeremiah’s message has been very consistent with this final generation of the people of Judah that are still in the land. He has proclaimed and taught his lessons at different times and in different areas to different audiences….hence the repetitive nature. But here we have the elders and priests assembled. Here the king is addressed. And the message is disaster is coming and your defiance in worshipping other gods is bringing it about. It is important for those most responsible for the situation they are in as well as those most able to get them out of it to hear the message, loud and clear…..No one will ever be able to say that God never told them.

  3. The people of Judah and Jerusalem are so far from God that He cannot recognize them. They have made Jerusalem an alien place. They have been worshipping false gods, making sacrifices of their children. Their punishment will be severe at the hands of their enemies….driving them to desperation and despair.

  4. So sad to hear this announcement especially knowing all the times they were encouraged, reminded, and even threatened to turn from their ways or else this would happen. Man can be so stubborn and so selfish and we find it too easy to put created things in front of the creator of those things. Thank you God for your grace and your mercy….and your patience!
