Reading along with us in Isaiah? Here’s today’s reading:
Isaiah 13 (NIV)
A Prophecy Against Babylon
1 A prophecy against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw:
2 Raise a banner on a bare hilltop,
shout to them;
beckon to them
to enter the gates of the nobles.
3 I have commanded those I prepared for battle;
I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath—
Isaiah 11-13
Here we go. Gods wrath against Babylon. Don’t think there’s any other place that spells out rebellion against God like Babylon. Modern day Iraq. A pile of sand!!
Isaiah has to bring some heavy news to Babylon…destruction coming. Sometimes I read the Old Testament quickly like it isn’t as pertinent to me today but the more I read it the more I realize how much we haven’t changed for thousands of years. I guess the sad part is now we have so many examples to learn from and we still don’t get it and still bring destruction upon ourselves as nations!
Even before Babylon is used as an instrument of God’s judgement against Judah, judgement is declared on them and the fact that the Medes will overtake them is revealed. They will be a tool in God’s hand as ever nation is ultimately. And this judgment on Babylon is described as the day of the Lord, a time of wrath and judgement, with signs in the sky and death and destruction on the earth. It will be clear that God is on the move and doing various things to right wrongs that have been done. So this day of the Lord becomes a day of the Lord…a prototype of what will happen in the end. What is amazing about this prophecy is at the time of it’s pronouncement Babylon is probably on the rise….gaining power in the East as the Assyrians begin losing power in the west. So another revelation that all of history stands before God and He can speak of the future like it is the present….
Isaiah 13
God’s judgement against Babylon.
