Isaac and Rebekah
1 Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. 2 He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh. 3 I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth,……Continue Reading

  1. Genesis 24
This chapter is like a fairy tale. Abraham knew what his plan was and gave explicit instruction to his chief servant where not to go for a wife. He gave instruction to go to Abraham’s own land and what he needed to do and say and how the chosen wife would respond. Once the servant got their he prayed to the God of Abraham that he would be successful and that she would be the one for servant Issac. Everything went as exactly as prayed and Rebekah went with the servant back to his land. Right away Issac and Rebekah knew they were for each other! I loved this chapter! Everyone obeyed God’s word. Abraham was always favored by God.

  2. Let no.man say, God does not answer prayer! Stunning!

Corporal Charles returned to his hometown, Falmouth, Ky, just discharged from service in the 22nd Infantry, Phillipines, 1901. Walking through town, in uniform, a wagon passed him by. A young girl, Delia, sat in the wagon, just enjoying the ride.

Seeing that soldier as she passed, Delia was so enamored, she fell off the wagon!

In due time they married. Charles & Delia were my great grandparents. So now you know! Genesis 24:64ff -reb

  3. Well said Linda. God lead Abraham to get a bride for Isaac. God is clearly in the picture for He guides the chief servant of Abraham to the right place and at the right time. The servant is silently praying and the Lord answers just exactly as he prayed. In this journey for we don`t know how long it was we can be sure that Abraham and Isaac were praying for the servant`s success. God was in it and therefore it was successful. And of course Rebekah agreed and went with the servant to meet Isaac. She was also putting her faith in God to even go to meet someone she didn`t know. But God had prepared her heart to be open and willing to go. When they met each other they got married. So the Lord blessed them. Isaac was 37 years old when his mother died. So perhaps he was waiting on God to provide a wife for him. When his mother died he probably became more aware of his own need to have a wife. Just a thought for he didn`t seek after a wife until his mom died. May the Lord bless.

  4. An account filled with the care of a father for his son, a concern for the will of God and the purity of the people that would come through Abraham, the faith of Abraham translated to his servant with which he believes and prays for God’s direction. and the orchestration of God’s sovereign will bringing the pieces together. It is good when a plan comes together and how much better that is when it is a mix of good choices, prayer, faith and the will of God! To think that God wants to do that with all of us!

  5. What a beautiful thing that unfolds when everyone is working according to God’s plan and following His direction. When a bride is sought for Isaac using the expectations God has for the marriage love is the end product. I imagine many arranged marriages are simply that arranged and not born of love but God clearly blesses this arrangement and orchestrates each step and love is present!

It makes me think how often nowadays appearance take precedant over character, unlike Eliezer’s prayer. He was looking for someone of character that would go above and beyond not one concerned about what she looked like. We also forget to pray for a spouse, pray that God would reveal the person God has for us and instead are guided by emotion and circumstance that typically have nothing to do with what God wants and we overlook obvious “red-flags” for something that “feels” right. It reminds me to pray everyday for the person each of my children might marry and that it would be revealed by God not simply by emotions that can so easily cloud our judgement.

  6. God’s answer to prayer can sometimes be immediate when it is necessary to do so according to his plan. It does not always take a long, drawn out process that requires steadfast patience. Therefore, we should not refrain from praying just because we need a quick response. He will help us in any given situation.

  7. Abraham asks his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant is faithful and obedient in the specifics (go to my father’s land) and in prayer (Lord show me EXACTLY which woman). Isn’t it wonderful when God orchestrates the specifics so there is no question. I like that they want to wait some time and ask Rebekah “will you go?”
