Acts 11 (NIV)

Peter Explains His Actions
1 The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.  2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him 3 and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”
4 Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story:.............Continue Reading

  1. Beware of the legalistic heart that says after hearing about Gentiles being saved from hell to heaven, how dare you walk into a gentile’s house. It is good that they come around after hearing how clearly God was working and how Peter was being led through the whole thing, but it’s sad that he would have share this in the sense of defending his actions. Not that ends justify the means, but we also don’t want to strain at gnats while we are swallowing camels. And how neat that they had seen the importance/acceptance of sharing the gospel to gentiles in Antioch. And it never hurts to send someone to a place where something new is being done to check it out, but hopefully Barnabas didn’t go with a suspicious eye. From what the rest of Acts says about him, being more of an encourager, it seems he was the best person to send. That he was filled with the Spirit and sensitive to His leading is the most important characteristic. And the Spirit is apparently leading when Barnabas goes and gets Paul and brings him to Antioch. They had met in Jerusalem in chapter 9 and the Spirit knew the powerful ministry they would have together. How important for every church to be operating in evangelism and the gifts of the Spirt. How clear it must have been in the way God was working there and Jesus was being exalted, that they had to call these people something different. Christian, ones of or related to Jesus, sounds really good!

  2. Old mindsets being transformed and realizing that God’s word is for everyone Jew and Gentile alike. Cool to see how fast the truth of God was spreading and through so many ways…visions, and signs, and people coming together to help spread His word.

  3. The Holy Spirit affirms the message among the Gentiles by gifting them as well. Peter assures the Jewish believers that the message of Jesus is also for the Gentiles.

  4. The apostles and the brothers sat quietly and listened to Peter even though they criticized him for preaching to the Gentiles. Because they thought carefully about what he said (and by the leading of the Holy Spirit), they were willing to accept that Gentiles too could be saved, glorifying God for it! I find it interesting that the first church where the believers were called Christians was in Antioch. Barnabas and Saul preached there but there were also other people who preached about the Lord Jesus and a great number of people believed. So, God even gives regular everyday people the ability to tell others about the Lord so they can be saved. And God expects us to help our brothers and sisters who are in need according to our ability to do so. That is an important aspect of the Christian life.
