Genesis 10 (ESV)
These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 From these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations. 6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. 8 Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Genesis 10:1 starts with “These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.”
After listing Japheth’s sons, Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras (Genesis 10:2) and then Gomer and Javan’s sons in Genesis 10:3-4, Genesis 10:5 shows such a dispersion that each had their own language by their clans in their own nations (Genesis 10:5).
They had their own languages and nations. That’s quite a dispersion!
One of Ham’s sons was named Cush who fathered Nimrod. Genesis 10:8-9 says, “He was the first on earth to be a mighty man. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Therefore it is said, ‘Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.'”
A mighty hunter? It says the beginning of his kingdom was Babel among others. That’s a name we’ll hear more of in the Genesis 11.
Canaan was another of Ham’s sons who in the last chapter was cursed by Noah because of Ham’s sin (Genesis 9:25). Canaan fathered sons and many clans who also dispersed over a wide territory including in the direction of Sodom and Gomorrah (another notorious place mentioned later in Genesis and throughout the Bible).
After listing Shem’s sons and their sons (and more dispersion), the chapter ends with, “These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood” (Genesis 10:32).
Since Noah lived for 350 years after the flood and his sons were on The Ark with him, you would think they would have passed down stories about the flood to the next generation, right? I mean, God judged the world and wiped nearly everyone and everything away because of sin. Surely the next generation received a warning not to rebel against God, no?

I read John 7 this morning and commented there. So blown away by Jesus’ fearless, daring love for us. He turned His face into the raging storm and walked right in.
