Reading along with us in 1 Chronicles and Luke? Here’s today’s reading:
Luke 6 (NIV)
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
1 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”…..Continue Reading

It always confuses me that the Pharisees could be so caught up in their legalism that they couldn’t see that doing good, like healing the sick, on the Sabbath would be what God would want from us. How could He want us to be so caught up in the rules that we forget the relationship and caring for one another! Then after Jesus defends His actions, He gives the Sermon on the Mount that just turned everything the priests and the Pharisees had been teaching upside down! A life showing love to one another, a life of sacrifice and putting others first, a life when we are not so quick to judge others but rather examine our own hearts first. Listening to Jesus’ teachings is so encouraging and yet convicting because His instruction seems so simple and yet this world and our selfish, prideful nature just can’t get it together to live this way!
Luke 6
So much in this passage—words to live by, if you can. Not so easy, but certainly well worth striving for.
I couldn’t agree more, Kelly, but that is what legalism does to people and to us if we are not careful. And even beyond just questioning Jesus about what He is doing, they plot to bring harm to Him because of it. More interested in their rules than the miracle worker that is before them. And this passage is often called the sermon on the plain due to the setting that it happens in. And we shouldn’t be surprised that Jesus taught similar things in different settings to different people. And considering the log in your eye is one of the most beneficial things that Jesus shares and causes us to think about ho we have added to situations we are in rather than just blaming others or circumstances. And what is in our heart comes out in some way and so it needs to be a focal point of our attention to guard it. And how stable our lives become when we live by the standards that Jesus and the rest of Scripture lay down. We really will be able to address anything that comes in our lives with a peace that flows from our knowledge of Him or one that passes understanding.
If someone in our church was in great need on a Sunday afternoon, we would certainly meet that person and do our best to meet their needs. Not concerned what day it was. Jesus did this on purpose to show the evil that was in their hearts. I’d love when he said the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath. The Creater.!! Vs 12. Jesus spends all night in prayer. Making sure every decision was bathed in prayer. So what should we be doing. 12 apostles. A band of misfits. So aren’t we. The beatitudes. The opposite of the world. Pray for your enemy’s. Forgive those that persecute you. God loves the WHOLE world. And the world is against him! Vs 24 stands out in this country. So many trying to find fulfillment in money. That does not last compared to eternity.
Luke 6 It’s aggravating to me how the Pharisees follow Jesus and the disciples around looking for anything they can find that they are doing wrong on the Sabbath , like the simple act of getting the grain out of the heads of wheat. You would think something would have clicked in their minds when Jesus tells them the son of a man is Lord of the Sabbath.
Luke 6
Psalm 111; Ezekiel 33; 1 Chronicles 12; Luke 6
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; All those who follow His commandments have a good understanding; His praise endures forever.”
Psalm 111:10 NASB2020
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” So hard to do, but Jesus commands us to do so. And to forgive others as God has forgiven us. When I remember this, it is easier to treat my enemies with love and compassion.
Luke 6
Jesus gives us sound teachings of how we respond to people who offend us and are unkind. We are not to judge others since we are sinners ourselves. Taking out thoughts captive before we give voice to what comes out of our mouth.i find if we allow the Holy Spirit to be involved in our daily walk I am more apt to follow God’s word. We need to guard our hearts since satin is in the world wanting us to slip up.
The Jews are outraged at Jesus healing on the sabbath and conspire against Him! It made me think of Romans 9 where we are in the women’s Bible study, the Jews did not attain righteousness because they did not seek it by faith. They think they can have a relationship with God by legalistic adherence to the law, but meanwhile they miss the heart, belief, faith demonstrated throughout all their history. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness, David was a man after Gods own heart….
“but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone.”
Romans 9:31-32 NKJV
