2 Kings 10 (NIV)

Ahab’s Family Killed
1 Now there were in Samaria seventy sons of the house of Ahab. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria: to the officials of Jezreel, to the elders and to the guardians of Ahab’s children. He said, 2“You have your master’s sons with you and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city and weapons. Now as soon as this letter reaches you,……Continue Reading

  1. Jehu goes to extreme lengths to obey the word of the Lord regarding the destruction of the house of Ahab and the worshippers of Baal. But unfortunately he does not address the idols at Bethel and Dan.

  2. Baal worship was associated with the dynasty of Ahab so it was politically advantageous to destroy Baal . The golden calves on the other hand had a longer history in the northern kingdom and were valued by all political factions Baal worship was anti-God but the golden calves were by many to be visible representations of God himself even though God‘s law stated clearly that such worship was idolatrous . Like Jehu , it is easy for us to denounce the sins of others while excusing the sin in our own lives. This from my footnotes thought it might be helpful.

  3. Jehu remains committed to root out all associates of Ahab and Baal worship and uses various means to do so. He sees Himself as the instrument to fulfill Elijah’s prophecy against the house of Ahab and does so much in destroying evil and yet doesn’t go all the way in what God would want. It is good for us to know from what God has said what He wants us to do and then for us to do it in obedience to it. But we must make sure we are following the whole counsel of God and not letting any evil work its way in so we end up supporting what is wrong even as we are doing what is right.

  4. It seems that pride slipped into Jehu’s mission to end the evil in the house of Ahab and those who worshipped Baal. It is evident in the extreme, really excessive,, killing that he did to complete it. We see obvious pride in verse 16 when Jehu said, “Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord.” It isn’t about the work that God is doing through him, it is about the work he feels he is doing. A powerful reminder that even when we are doing God’s work we must be sure we are doing it with a pure heart and mind for His glory and not our own.

  5. So, Jehu carried out all that the Lord said he would do to the house of Ahab. And he would be rewarded for it. However, he did not turn away from idol worship, and he was not careful to keep the law of the Lord with all his heart. Because of this, it is written that Jehu is not faithful to the Lord, comparing him to a wicked man like Jeroboam instead of comparing him to a righteous man like Elijah. Our legacy lies with the actions we take in our daily lives so let’s do our best to choose those things that strengthen our relationship with God and keep us faithful to him.
