2 Kings 11 (ESV)

Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal family. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. 1. 17And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord’s people, and also between the king and the people. 18Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars

  2. What a great story about righteousness being restored in Judah. It is neat to see that in spite of the evil perpetuated by the certain kings of Judah because of their connection with Ahab, there were those who continued to desire God’s ways, namely here Jehoiada, the priest. Kudos also goes to Jehosheba, the daughter of an evil king, who saves the life of Joash even though her own sister was seeking his life. When the time was right, the righteous priest gave the plan and found others willing to follow. Sometimes that is all it takes for God’s ways to win: someone to take the lead. Once that happens, not only is the rightful and righteous king put in place, but the temple of Baal is also destroyed. This is the start of a good thing for Judah….even though Joash is only 7!
