Reading along with us in 1 Thessalonians? Here’s today’s reading:

1 Thessalonians 5 (ESV)

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. 1. Living in light as opposed to living in darkness is a good picture for us. Not doing things that require secrecy or the cover of night because of its shamefulness. But doing things that are good that we don’t care if people observe us doing. And what great instruction in this whole chapter, defining various aspects of the Christian life. Be joyful always, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances are good places to start. I mean, isn’t it a good thing to be called to these dynamics? Isn’t it great that God would desire for us to be joyful and that He would give us the capacity to be thankful in all circumstances? Joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit and is an essential result of the Christian life. If we are not finding joy in it, Satan’s ability to tempt us with the transient and empty satisfaction of his kingdom will be enhanced. But we as believers have many reasons to have joy even in the midst of horrible circumstances if we will only trust God for who He is and what He is providing and what He will provide….

  2. Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise prophecies, 21but test everything; hold fast what is good
