1 Peter 3 (NIV)

1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight............Continue Reading

  1. I love that this chapter starts with a reminder of how marriage should look and the roles of wives and husbands. Society is showing us that the work of a marriage is too great and are finding so many alternative ways around the work. Submit does not come naturally to me so it is my reminder every day to pick up my cross as Christ did.
    Then to love others comes next, once our house is in order it is easier to step outside and continue the pattern of love and patience to others. People will hurt us, disappoint us, and we are still called to love we still pick up that cross each day and follow the example of Christ. If he can love and forgive us and give His son to pay our penalty of death as we continuously mess up we should be able to love others through the hurts they may cause us.

  2. unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s eyes. I am always working on this. Even though I know he likes it I struggle. If someone is unkind to us we need to let that go and pray for them.

  3. There is certainly a lot involved with being a Christian but if we could follow through with verse 15 we would be well along the way.

  4. I think of these as the anti-nagging verses. “be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.” If you have an unbelieving or disobedient husband, you aren’t going to win him over with words. Your behavior and relationship with the Lord will.

    And husbands, don’t be controlling or condescending. “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”

    And with everyone else:
    Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; 9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For

    “He who would love life
    And see good days,
    Let him refrain his tongue from evil,
    And his lips from speaking deceit.
    11 Let him turn away from evil and do good;
    Let him seek peace and pursue it.
    12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    And His ears are open to their prayers;
    But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

  5. How different our world would be if women and men took to heart what Peter expresses in these first few verses. If both women and men realized that true beauty does not come from the outside, but from the inside, how better off we would be. The world is so preoccupied with physical appearance both in what they present and what they observe that it consumes so much time and effort, leads to so much sin and destruction and distracts from the spiritual. May we seek to be more on the inside than the outside and thereby be what others need us to be and be able to deal with people and situations as God would desire, both in marriage and in life. That will lead to the humility, compassion and patience that Peter encourages next. It helps to know God is watching so when the world responds to our goodness with poor treatment, we know God can compensate in the way He sees fit. Setting aside Jesus as Lord sets us on the right course, stabilizes us in life and gives a hope that makes the world wonder where is that coming from. We always need to be ready with an answer as well as living a life that warrants the question. And as Peter has said before, if we need a reference point of getting less from the world and suffering unjustly, all we need to do is consider Jesus and all He went through for us. And in the end He proved Himself victorious, so we can count on being on the winning side as we align ourselves with Him.

  6. Wives should submit to their husbands, do what is right, and not give way to fear following Sarahs example to Abraham. A gentle and quiet spirit is pleasing to God. Don’t repay evil with evil. Be eager to do good and if you suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Jesus was the perfect example of this when he died for us.
