Reading along with us in Psalms? Here’s today’s reading:

Psalm 78 (ESV)

Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
I will open my mouth in a parable;
    I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
    that our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
    but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
    and the wonders that he has done..

  1. So Asaph gets historical in this Psalm and reminds the Israelites all that God did before them and for them and how Israel was unfaithful and did not follow God. But he shares this so the younger generation will know and follow God and not repeat the mistakes of the generations that went before them. So Asaph recounts the miracle of God in Egypt and the provisions He made in the desert. But when He blessed them, they disobeyed. When He chastised them, they would make their way back to Him. They were so unfaithful in the presence of a God who was ultimately faithful to them. And it’s unfortunate that this same pattern has continued in every generation and just further reveals the evil hearts of humankind and how dependent we are on God’s grace and how important it is for us to grow in His power to overcome our sinful and selfish ways. What a great God He is to persevere with humankind for so long….but that patience has a limit…but that is a different story found in the book of Revelation and not so much here in Psalm 78.

  2. 3 things that we have heard and known,
    that our fathers have told us.
    4 We will not hide them from their children,
    but tell to the coming generation
    the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
    and the wonders that he has done.
    5 He established a testimony in Jacob
    and appointed a law in Israel,
    which he commanded our fathers
    to teach to their children,
    6 that the next generation might know them,
    the children yet unborn,
    and arise and tell them to their children,
    7 so that they should set their hope in God
    and not forget the works of God,

  3. Very uplifting messages today…yikes!

    We all fall short from time to time but as long as our faith in our Savior remains steadfast, His in us will too.
